NORMAN, Okla -- The Oklahoma women's golf team carded an 8-over-par 296 in Friday's second round of the 24-team NCAA West Regional to climb to 14th place at the par-72 Colorado National Golf Course in Erie, Colo. The Sooners, whose 296 was the sixth best score of the day, own a two-day total of 601 strokes (+25).
In order to advance to the NCAA Championship, Oklahoma must finish in the top eight. The 28th-ranked Sooners are just four strokes behind eighth-place California.
“It was a long day out there,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “We played in tough conditions with rain and cold temperatures all day. We are in a perfect position to make a move tomorrow and need to take advantage of the bad weather they're calling for.”
The Sooners began the second round in 18th place after shooting a first-round 305 (+17). Their Friday performance was nine shots better than their Thursday total.
Junior Jacki Marshall led OU on the second day of play. Marshall jumped 46 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 63rd place after shooting an even-par 72. After registering a +8 on the back nine in Thursday's first round, Marshall played the same nine holes at 1 under par Friday. Her day consisted of two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars.
Sophomores Anne-Catherine Tanguay and Chirapat Jao-Javanil each fired a 1-over 73 in the second round. Tanguay recorded a team-high four birdies and improved upon her first-round score by three strokes to move into a tie for 30th place out of 126 competitors. Jao-Javanil also moved up four spots on the leaderboard into a four-way tie for eighth place. She trails leader Catherine O'Donnell of North Carolina by six strokes.
Sophomore Emily Collins shot a second-round 78 (+6) and is tied for 71st place with a 36-hole total of 154 (+10), while junior Taylor Schmidt's second-round 80 (+8) has her tied for 111th place with a two-round 161 (+17).
First-place Stanford owns a 36-hole total of 580 (+4) and leads second-place LSU by one stroke. The middle of the leaderboard is extremely tight with eight teams, including Oklahoma, within seven shots of eighth-place California.
The Sooners will tee off in the final round of the NCAA West Regional Saturday beginning at 1:11 p.m. CT. Live stats will be available on Golfstat.com and NCAA.com.
