Sooners Drop Game Two, Series at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- No. 22 Oklahoma held a one-run lead through six innings until No. 4 Texas A&M plated two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth during a 5-2 victory on Friday.
The win clinched the series for the Aggies (25-6 overall, 6-2 Big 12) after they won a 12-inning thriller on Thursday night 3-2. The Sooners (18-13, 4-7) dropped their second Big 12 series of the year in four opportunities.
“They are very good at home, we understand that,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “Their pitching keeps them in games. Our pitching has kept us in games but our offense just hasn't got it going.”
Dillon Overton was masterful in the first 4 2/3 innings of his start until Texas A&M broke up the no-hit bid. After retiring 13 straight batters, Overton gave up a single through the left side of the infield and he came around to score on a base hit by Blake Allemand and a wild pitch.
That cut the 2-0 Sooner lead in half and the Aggies came back in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead on Overton on the Sooners. The lead could have been 4-2 if Erik Ross did not gun down another run at the plate in the seventh. Unfortunately for Oklahoma, Texas A&M tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning off a two-run homer by Matt Juengel to left field.
Overton (4-1) lasted 7 1/3 innings with no walks and four strikeouts in his first loss of the 2012 season. Meanwhile, Aggies' starter Ross Stripling tossed a complete game with zero walks and eight strikeouts.
The Sooners broke up Stripling's no-hit bid in the fourth inning with a pair of singles to centerfield to begin the frame. Both Ross and Jack Mayfield moved up a base on Stripling's wild pitch and just when it looked like OU would break but were stranded on second and third.
OU gave itself another great opportunity in the fifth inning with runners on first and third and zero outs. However, a potential sacrifice squeeze by Garrett Carey eliminated Cody Reine, who was trying to score from third base. Carey redeemed himself with a RBI single to score Tanner Toal from second base. Two Sooner batters later, and Erik Ross' infield single brought home Carey for a 2-0 OU lead.
“The fourth inning really hurt us,” said Golloway. To have runners on second and third and your three and four hole up, and come up with a zero is pretty tough. Stripling was really good. Guys like that you are only going to get a couple of chances. Ours were in the fourth and fifth. We took advantage in the fifth, we didn't take advantage in the fourth.”
OU and Texas A&M conclude the series on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Fans can listen to the game on the Sooner Sports Network KREF 1400 AM with Toby Rowland on the call. The game will also be televised nationally on ESPNU.
“We have to come out and fight hard everyday,” added Golloway. “Baseball is what it is. You have to take the good with the bad. We played pretty good for six (innings) and we didn't play so good in the seventh and eighth and it cost us.”
