OU Baseball: Five Things to Watch at Kansas

NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 23 Oklahoma (26-16, 7-8 Big 12) returns to Big 12 play this weekend with a three-game set at Kansas (17-25, 4-11). Friday's opener at Hoglund Ballpark is set for 6 p.m. Saturday's game will also get underway at 6 p.m. and Sunday's finale is slated for noon.
Below are five things to watch this weekend when the Sooners and Jayhawks meet for the 28th consecutive season.
1. Forget about what just happened
Yes, the Sooners dropped both of their midweek games this past week, falling to Oklahoma State and Dallas Baptist, and although it might not have been great for morale, ultimately it doesn't matter in the Big 12 standings. Both games were non-conference matchups. Instead, OU can focus on the fact it has won eight of its past 10 games, including a Big 12 sweep of Missouri two weekends ago. This weekend's games could also be a boost for the Sooners as they take on a Kansas team that is just 17-25 overall and 4-11 in the conference. OU is 26-16 and 7-8. OU swept Kansas the past two years and has won eight in a row overall against KU.
2. Give em 5
OU fell twice this past week, 6-1 to Oklahoma State and 8-2 to Dallas Baptist, continuing a trend where the Sooners are great if they can hold opponents to five runs or less. In those games, the Sooners are 24-3. However, when teams score six or more against OU, the Sooners are 2-13.
3. Score early and often
OU hasn't had issues scoring early as the Sooners have outscored opponents in the first inning, but getting an early lead hasn't been the determining factor. OU is just 13-10 when scoring first. OU scored first against Oklahoma State and lost 6-1. The Sooners also scored first and lost to Dallas Baptist, 8-2. The OU offense needs to continue to plate early runs but do so in bunches when the opportunity arises.

4. John playing well
Jordan John, who will start Friday against the Jayhakws has been consistent all season. He has gone seven or more innings in all five of his starts and also had a complete game shutout last week where he struck out 12 against Alabama State. This season, John has a 7-4 record with a 2.54 ERA and he will look to get OU off to a good start in tonight's series opener. Jonathan Gray (3-4, 4.72) will start Saturday. Sunday's starter has not been determined.
5. Playing for seeding
OU is 7-8 in Big 12 play and in fifth place, but just a game behind Oklahoma State and two games behind Texas. OU has nine conference games left, including three against Baylor and three against OSU – teams ahead of the Sooners in the standings. Meanwhile, OU has two non-conference games against TCU remaining, so a strong finish will certainly help the Sooners when the postseason rolls around.
