NORMAN, Okla. -- The 26th-ranked Oklahoma women's golf team fired a 295 (+7) in the final round ofits regular season Sunday at the 18-team Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. The Sooners totaled a 54-hole score of 895 (+31) to finish in 11th place after entering the day in 13th.
Oklahoma finished ahead of four top-50 opponents in its toughest tournament field this season. The Liz Murphey featured 11 top-40 teams, including three ranked in the top 10. All of the 18 competing schools are ranked in the top 100.
“We played better today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin of the Sooners' best round of the event. “It was nice seeing Emily (Collins) play well. Now we are going to prepare and get ready in the next few weeks for postseason play.”
Oklahoma was led on the final day by Collins' even-par 72 round. The sophomore began the day in a tie for 81st place and moved up 22 spots to finish in a tie for 59th place out of 90 competitors with a three-round 230 (+14).
Sophomore Chirapat Jao-Javanil was OU's top finisher on the weekend, tying for 33rd place. Jao-Javanil fired a final-round 74 and totaled 223 strokes (+7) over 54 holes.
Fellow sophomore Anne-CatherineTanguay also shot a 2-over 74 in the third round for a final total of 228 stokes (+12) and a 60th-place tie.
Taylor Schmidt carded a 3-over 75 in the final round to finish in 34th place with a three-round 224 (+8).
Fellow junior Jacki Marshall shot a 7-over 79 Sunday and tied for 49th place with a 227 (+11).
No. 2-ranked Alabama was the only team to finish under par, recording a 54-hole score of 854 (-10). Second-place Georgia finished 13 strokes behind the Crimson Tide.
Oklahoma will next compete in a non-conference 18-hole matchup against Oklahoma State in the Bedlam Cup on April 22. The Sooners will host the event at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club and fans are encouraged to come out and support OU.
The Sooners' postseason play begins April 27-29 at the Big 12 Championship in Lawrence, Kan.
