EUGENE, Ore. -- A four-run ninth inning was not enough as the No. 16 Sooners fell 8-7 to Connecticut in the first game of the Nike College Showcase played at PK Park in Eugene.
Jack Mayfield (2-for-4, 2 RBI)
keyed the rally in the ninth with a two-run double to gap in left center that allowed Max White and Cody Reine to come around and score. Evan Mistich added a two-run, two-out single later in the frame but Matt Oberste's fielder's choice ended the comeback and the Sooners' five-game winning streak.
OU dropped to 9-4 in the first ever meeting against Connecticut (5-6).
The Sooners gave up three runs in the first inning with Steven Okert on the mound but bounced back with three unanswered runs thanks to RBIs from Reine, Caleb Bushyhead and Matt Oberste.
However, the 3-3 tie was broken in the sixth inning as Okert gave up two more runs and then another in the eighth before being pulled in favor of Jordan John and Kindle Ladd in the Sooner bullpen.
"I think the key to game was the three runs in the first," said OU Head Coach Golloway. "You have to tip your cap, one thing that Connecticut did well today was put the ball in play."
The Sooners return to action in the 2012 Nike Showcase on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT against West Virginia. The game will again be played at PK Park in Eugene and is the first of two
games schedule for OU. The Sooners will play the host No. 9 Ducks at 7 p.m.
"It will be an exciting day of baseball and hopefully the weather holds up," said Golloway. "I am thankful for the two games tomorrow because we have to continue to get better."
