EUGENE, Ore. -- Dillon Overton tossed a complete game with six strikeouts and zero walks as the No. 16 Sooners beat West Virginia in the second game of the Nike College Showcase played at PK Park in Eugene.

"It was outstanding and that's what we told him," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway on Overton's performance. "I thought he minimized his pitch count. We told him he had to force contact to get us through it quickly and let the defense do the work. It was really big with the double dip today and another game tomorrow."

The Sooners broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning with three runs, keyed by the go-ahead run scored off Jack Mayfield's RBI double. Max White (3-for-4, RBI) also drove in a run in the eighth on a single and Garrett Carey followed with a RBI groundout.

It marked the second straight game that featured a clutch hit by Mayfield, who delivered a two-run double in the ninth inning of Friday's 8-7 loss to Connecticut.

"He had a game-winning hit earlier in the year, you know, he's pretty much `Mr. Clutch' late in games," added Golloway. "He has a lot of confidence and a lot of calmness about him."

The win upped OU's record to 10-4 and is the first of two games slated for today as the Sooners return to action in the Nike Showcase against the host No. 9 Ducks at 7 p.m. Oregon, 10-2 overall, lost a one-run ballgame last night to Illinois and is currently playing West Virginia.

Overton (3-0) tossed 98 pitches in the contest and did not exceed 10 pitches in each of the last seven frames.

West Virginia, which took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, dropped to 6-8 on the season and 0-2 in the tournament.

Overton settled down after giving up the two runs, one unearned, in the second inning and a double in the third inning, and sat down 18 straight batters going into the ninth inning. Overton gave up a single in the ninth before inducing a 4-3 double play to end the contest in under two hours.

For the Mountaineers, Marshall Thompson gave up all five runs off five hits and three walks. He lasted 7 1/3 innings with three strikeouts before dropping to 1-3 on the season.

"West Virginia played really well, their pitcher was outstanding," added Golloway.

The Sooners fell behind 2-0 in the second inning but countered immediately in the bottom half of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Lockwood and a double steal attempt that brought home Caleb Bushyhead from third base.
