NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma gymnasts Kayla Nowak and Megan Ferguson won two of the three Big 12 weekly awards for March 6, Nowak was named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week while Ferguson earned her fifth straight Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week award, announced by the league Tuesday.
Nowak was named Gymnast of the Week after scoring a career-high-tying 39.375 in her first all-around competition of the season. Nowak stepped in on vault at the last minute and posted a season-high 9.8, while adding season-highs of 9.75 on both bars and floor.
Nowak's 9.875 on floor helped boost OU's team total to a season-high 49.500 which led to the Sooners' 197.300-197.150 win over Alabama.
Ferguson won Event Specialist of the Week after her clutch floor performance against No. 5 Alabama last Friday. OU trailed the Crimson Tide by .425 heading into the final event and needed at least a 9.825 from Ferguson in the final routine to beat Alabama.
Ferguson ended the meet with a career-high-tying 9.95 on floor to win the event as well as secure OU's victory over the previously unbeaten Tide.
Ferguson added a 9.9 on bars and a 9.85 on beam as well against Alabama. The senior has posted a 9.9 or higher in 15 of her last 18 routines and is currently ranked No. 1 nationally on floor, No. 2 on beam and No. 2 on bars.
Ferguson won the Event Specialist of the Week award for the fifth straight week, a conference record.
Ferguson, Nowak and the Sooners will see their second straight top five matchup as they take on No. 3 UCLA in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 11 at 4 p.m. CT. UCLA is coming off its 198.050 performance on Feb. 24, the Bruins are the only team in the NCAA to break the 198-mark.
