NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 8/9 Oklahoma took down Iowa, 4-2, for the second straight day on Sunday at Marita Hynes Field as they improved to 14-3 while Iowa fell to 9-9. The Sooners were helped by another strong performance in the circle by Keilani Ricketts as she moved to 8-3 on the year and freshman Georgia Casey's first career home run. The win was Oklahoma's fifth straight, all coming in the last week.
Ricketts struck out 11 Hawkeyes while giving up three hits and two runs. The game was the sixth straight start for Ricketts that the junior struck out at least 10 batters and the ninth overall time this season. Ricketts wrapped up a week that saw the junior collect four wins and one save while striking out 54 batters and giving up just eight hits and three runs in 30.1 innings of work.
Iowa's Chelsea Lyon took the loss to fall to 5-4 as the Sooners got at least seven hits for the fifth time in the last six games. The game also marked the fifth straight game with at least four runs for OU.
“I thought we made some big strides this weekend. We showed some tenacity in coming back in Oklahoma City,” said OU Head Coach Patty Gasso. “We had a good game plan and we did a good job at executing it. Today was a nice win versus a good team. We're still a work in progress but our goal is to stay competitive.
Oklahoma got the first run of the game in the second inning when Lauren Chamberlain led off with a triple down the right field line before she scored on a passed ball by Iowa catcher Liz Watkins.
The Sooners scored for a second straight inning in the third when Destinee Martinez led off with a bouncing single to third. After the speedy leadoff hitter stole second, Ricketts sent a double down the left field line to send Martinez around for OU's second run of the game.
Ricketts was replaced on the base path by Callie Parsons who scored two batters later when Casey, in just her sixth collegiate at bat, sent a shot over the left field fence for a two-run home run.
Iowa got on the board in the fifth when Brianna Luna was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a Watkins single. After a Bradi Wall single that scored Luna and sent Watkins to third, pinch hitter Kayla Massey scored Watkins on a sacrifice fly to deep center where Martinez made a catch on a full sprint.
Oklahoma returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Austin Peay in Norman at 5 p.m. Tickets start at just $4 and can be purchased online at SoonerSports.com or by calling the OU Ticket Office at (405) 325-2424. The game will be the first of the season televised on the Sooner Sports Network.
