OKLAHOMA CITY -- One day after one-hitting LSU, Keilani Ricketts was back at it again as No. 8/9 Oklahoma defeated the Tigers 5-0 Saturday afternoon at The Preview in Oklahoma City to move to 12-3 while LSU fell to 10-6.
The game was almost a replay of Oklahoma's 7-0 win over the Tigers in Norman on Friday night. LSU was unable to have the familiarity of the Sooner lineup as OU Head Coach Patty Gasso went with her 14th different lineup in 15 games. With the two wins, Oklahoma captured the series lead with the Tigers, 7-6.
Ricketts allowed just three hits while striking out 10 in her seventh win of the season. Ricketts (7-3) hit double-digit mark in strikeouts for the fifth straight game and the eighth time this season.
Oklahoma got on the board first in the top of the third with three hits and the help of an LSU error by second baseman Rikki Alcaraz on Ricketts leadoff at bat. After Ricketts was replaced on the base by Callie Parson, Brittany Williams dropped a single into short center that put Sooners runners at first and second. After Allee Allen popped out in foul territory to the LSU third baseman, Lauren Chamberlain sent a shot off the left field fence for a double that scored Parsons.
After Kelley Reeves struck out, Katie Norris walked to load the bases for Oklahoma before Javen Henson delivered OU's second double of the inning to clear the bases and up Oklahoma's run total up to four.
The Sooners added a run in the sixth when Jessica Vest came on to run for Norris who had reached base on a fielder's choice. After Henson walked, both she and Vest stole second and third, respectively. As Ali Vandever walked, Vest scored on a wild pitch by Tiger pitcher Rachele Fico.
The game was the first of two for the Sooners at the event as they turn around and face Iowa 30 minutes after the game. Oklahoma returns to action on Sunday at 11 a.m. when it hosts Iowa at Martia Hynes Field. Tickets start at just $4 and fans who bring a ticket to the OU vs. Kansas women's basketball game can purchase a general admission softball ticket for just $4.
