NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women's golf team shot a second-round 292 (+5) in Saturday's second round of the 12-team Clover Cup in Mesa, Ariz., to improve to second place.
No. 30 OU, which is looking to record its fourth first- or second-place finish in seven team outings this season, trails leader Colorado by 24 strokes. The Sooners lead third-place Notre Dame by three shots and fourth-place Tulsa by five shots.
"We played solid all day before making a few bogeys down the stretch," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. "We need to keep things simple; we're thinking too much over different shots."
All five OU team participants are in the top 28 in a field of 71 golfers.
Chirapat "Ja" Jao-Javanil led the way for OU for the second straight day by shooting her second consecutive 1-under-par 71. Jao-Javanil bogeyed holes 1 and 5 before shooting 3 under over the final 13 holes to move into a tie for sixth place.
Sophomore Emily Collins improved to 10th place with her second straight even-par 72. Collins was at 2 under par before bogeying two of the final three holes (her only bogeys of the day).
OU junior Jacki Marshall birdied No. 18 to finish with a second-round 75 (+3). She jumped seven spots on the leaderboard into a 16th-place tie.
Junior Taylor Schmidt, who stood at even par entering the day, played even for 16 of 18 holes Saturday. A triple-bogey on the par-4 fourth hole and a double-bogey on the par-5 18th] resulted in a 5-over 77. Schmidt is tied with Marshall for 16th place.
Sophomore Anne-Catherine Tanguay recorded four birdies on the day en route to a 2-over 74 and is in 28th place.
Sophomore Jade Staggs, competing for OU as an individual and unattached from team scoring, rebounded from an opening-round 88 to notch a second-round 79 (+7) to move up to 67th place.
