FULLERTON, Calif. -- Oklahoma Head Coach Patty Gasso hit a major coaching milestone Friday as she hit the 1,000-win mark as her No. 7 Sooners defeated Virginia, 9-1, at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif. The win gave Oklahoma its 14th in a row as the Sooners moved to 23-3 on the year.
With the win, Gasso moved to 840-272-2 at Oklahoma and 1,000-333-3.
Michelle Gascoigne got the win for the season and remained perfect on the year with a record of 10-0. The junior struck out nine while giving up just one run off five hits.
Oklahoma jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to Jessica Shults' eighth home run of the season, a solo shot over right center.
After not recording a run in the second inning, Oklahoma put together a six-run third inning highlighted by a three-run home run from freshman Georgia Casey. Javen Henson led things off for the Sooners with a double to left center before Destinee Martinez laid down a successful bunt to put Sooners on the corners. Martinez stole second before Jessica Shults sent a single through the right side of the Virginia infield to send Henson home for the first run of the inning.
After Callie Parsons replaced Shults on the base path, Keilani Ricketts sent a double off the center field wall to score Martinez and send Parsons to third. After a Lauren Chamberlain strikeout, Casey sent her three-run shot over the left field fence for her fourth career home run. The Sooners were not done scoring in the inning, however, as Brittany Williams followed with a double to right center before Brianna Turang legged out a single to second that sent Williams to third. When the Virginia defense attempted to catch Turang stealing at second, Williams took off for home and Oklahoma's seventh run.
Virginia got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Alex Skinkis singled up the middle before stealing second. Skinkis advanced to third on a ground out to Gascoigne before scoring on a single through the right side by Karli Johnson.
Oklahoma waited until the final inning to add two more runs as Erica Sampson reached on a single before advancing to second on a throwing error. After a Turang bunt put runners on the corners, Allee Allen sent a sacrifice fly deep to center to score Sampson. Back-to-back singles from Ali Vandever and Martinez loaded the bases for Shults who hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Turang for Oklahoma's ninth and final run.
The game was Oklahoma's first of the day as they return to play Penn State at 5 p.m. PST.
