What to Watch for in Baseball's Red River Rivalry

NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 17 Oklahoma (11-6) opens Big 12 play today at 6:30 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park against Texas (7-8). The series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
What to watch for in baseball's Red River Rivalry:
1. OU's Dynamite Dillon
The Sooner starting pitcher Friday night ranks first in the conference in innings pitched, he's already got three wins, he's fourth in strikeouts and has a nifty 2.84 ERA. Meanwhile, Overton is 1-0 against Texas, throwing 4 2/3 innings and allowing just two hits and no earned runs last year in the series finale win. Overton was the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week last week after going 2-0, including a complete-game victory over West Virginia.
2. Getting off to a good start
Not only is it important to beat Texas, but Friday's opener in the three-game series, marks the beginning of Big 12 conference play. The Sooners haven't been great against the Longhorns in Norman, going 13-19 since 1962. In addition, OU hasn't been good in the first game of the series against Texas. The Longhorns are 12-3 in game one and have won nine openers. Overall, Texas has won the last 13 conference series against the Sooners, dating back to 1999.

3. This could be the year
OU comes into the weekend series against Texas ranked No. 17, while the Longhorns are unranked. Texas went to the College World Series last year, but is just 7-8 this year. OU is 11-6. The last time Texas came into a series against Oklahoma unranked was 1998.
4. White on a roll
Max White is on a hot streak. He is hitting .486 (18-for-37) with 15 RBI, five multi-hit games and five multi-RBI games in his current 10-game hitting streak, a career high and the longest by a Sooner this season). White ranks seventh in the Big 12 with 17 RBI, eighth in hits (22) and ninth in batting average (.355), despite driving in two runs in his first seven games.
5. Promotions
There's lots to celebrate this weekend as Texas comes in. On Saturday, reserved tickets are just $8, saving $4 off the regular price. General admission tickets are just $4. Also, the first 100 fans throughout the weekend, receive a green St. Patrick's Day Cup. On Saturday, OU will wear green socks, batting gloves, hats and helmets. The first 500 fans will get a green T-shirt from the OU IT Store and the Sooners will sign autographs after the game. On Sunday, kids can run the bases after the game and play in the outfield. All weather permitting, of course.
