NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 8 Oklahoma closed out its weekend Sunday night with a two-game sweep of Indiana and a barrage of home runs following a soaking rain that pushed back the start time of the games. The Sooners scored 14 of 16 runs off eight home runs on the night as OU won its first game, 4-1, before run ruling the Hoosiers, 12-1, in five innings for the night cap.
The two wins extended Oklahoma's win streak to 11 games, the longest since the 2010 OU squad won 15 straight, as it moved to 20-3 on the year.
OU found the offensive firepower it was looking for over the entire weekend as the Sooners finished the Courtyard by Marriott Norman Oklahoma Spring Festival with a record of 5-0 and 17 home runs. The Sooners recorded three run rule victories over the weekend and have run ruled four of its last six opponents.
The Sooners have outscored their last six opponents, 56-2, while hitting at least three home runs in four of their last five games including five in Sunday night's second game and against Wichita State in its 13-0 Friday night win. For the season, OU has multiple home runs in nine different games.
“We're starting to see what we work on at practice pay off. Our batters are starting to settle in and produce quality at bats,” said OU Head Coach Patty Gasso. “We've been so anxious to get in and get contact. We're not wasting at bats and we're starting to manage our counts better. Seeing this unfold in front of us has been fun.”
Keilani Ricketts got the win for the Sooners in the evening's first game as she moved to 10-3 on the year. Despite giving up seven hits, Ricketts had just one run scored on her which was the unearned variety. Shults paced the Sooners at the plate with her second multiple home run game of the weekend, connecting on home runs in the back-to-back at bats. Shults and Ricketts each hit two against Wichita State on Friday.
Michelle Gascoigne took the win in the night's second game as she remained undefeated on the year with a 9-0 record. The junior struck out eight Hoosiers while allowing three hits and one earned run.
The Sooners got on the board first in the first game as Shults and Ricketts connected on back-to-back home runs for the second time of the weekend. After accomplishing the feat Friday night against Wichita State, the All-American duo did it again as Shults hit a two-run home run shot, scoring herself and Destinee Martinez who reached base on a fielder's choice. With the bases cleared, Ricketts followed with a solo shot over the centerfield fence for her sixth home run of the season and her third of the weekend.
Oklahoma gave up its first run in 25 innings in the fourth as Samantha Berenter scored an unearned run after reaching on an error by Ricketts. The Indiana second baseman advanced to third on a single by Shannon Cawley before scoring on a single by Meaghan Murphy.
One inning later, Shults knocked her second ball out of the park with a shot that sailed over the right field fence and left the OU Softball Complex for a 4-1 Oklahoma lead. The home run was Shults's sixth of the season and gave the junior her second multi-home run game of the weekend after hitting two in Oklahoma's win over Wichita State on Friday.
The home run barrage continued in the night's second game with Chamberlain hitting the night's first with a leadoff shot in the second inning to put OU on the board first. Brittany Williams singled through the right side on the next at bat before moving to second after Allee Allen was hit by a pitch and advancing to third on a fielder's choice from Javen Henson. With runners on the corners, Oklahoma executed the double steal with Henson taking second and Williams home for OU's second run of the game.
For the second straight game, Indiana got a lone run as Kelsey Brannon doubled down the left field line before moving to third on a Samantha Heyman sacrifice bunt. A Breanna Saucedo single sent Brannon home for IU's lone run of the game in the top of the third.
The Sooners quickly countered with three runs in the bottom of the third as Shults sent her third home run of the night over the fence of the OU Softball Complex for OU's third run of the game. After Georgia Casey singled to left, Chamberlain joined Shults as the second Sooner of the night to hit multiple home runs in a game with a two-run shot to left.
Oklahoma erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game away as Allen led off with a one-out single up the middle before Henson hit her second home run of the weekend and the season over the centerfield fence. After Indiana got a second Oklahoma out, Shults singled up the middle before Ricketts and Jessica Vest picked up back-to-back walks. With the bases load, Indiana relief pitcher Meaghan Murphy hit Chamberlain with a pitch to send Shults home. One batter later, Erica Sampson cranked out her first career home run with a grand slam to the left field bleachers to extend the Oklahoma lead to 12-1 and ensure the run rule.
Next up for the Sooners is a trip to Fullerton, Calif., for the Judi Garman Classic. Oklahoma takes on No. 25 Depaul and No. 14 Michigan on Thursday before facing Virginia and Penn State on Friday. OU closes out the weekend on Saturday morning with a match up versus No. 4 Washington.
