NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma Athletics Communications Office and Sooner Sports Properties announced the Sooner baseball team's 2012 radio and internet broadcast schedule on Friday.
The season marks the third with KREF 1400 AM serving as the flagship station of Sooner baseball. The partnership started prior to the 2010 season and provides expanded coverage for OU fans to listen to 50-plus regular season games live over the air. The station's coverage will also extend into postseason play.
The entire 56-game regular season schedule will also be broadcast live on the internet via Oklahoma All-Access, OU's premium content site.
The first opportunity to hear Oklahoma baseball live on KREF 1400 AM falls on opening day, Friday, Feb. 17, as the Sooners open a three-game series in Malibu, Calif., against Pepperdine. Game three of the series on Sunday can also be heard on KREF while game two will be an internet only broadcast.
The three-game road series will be followed by the home opener on Friday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. against Hartford. All three games against Hartford can be heard live on the radio.
Sunny Golloway enters his seventh full season at the helm of the OU program and the Sooners return five position starters and two weekend starters from last year's team that went 41-19, including 2011 freshman All-American Dillon Overton and 2010 freshman All-American Max White. Other key starters returning include Caleb Bushyhead (SS), Jordan John (LHP), Evan Mistich (UTL), Cody Reine (OF) and Erik Ross (OF).
OU, which is ranked as high as No. 14 in the by the National College Baseball Writers' Association (NCBWA) in the preseason, made its 34th NCAA tournament appearance (fourth straight) in 2011 and won 40 or more games for the third consecutive year.
Toby Rowland, who recently completed his first season as the play-by-play announcer for the University of Oklahoma football team and is currently working with the Sooner men's basketball team, will begin calling the action for the Sooner baseball team in 2012.
Rowland has been a reporter and anchor for KWTV (CBS) in Oklahoma City since 2000 and the morning talk show host on KREF radio in Norman since 2004. He joined the OU football broadcast as the sideline reporter in 2009 and previously helped provide extensive radio and television play-by-play work for Sooner men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball and wrestling.
"I'm thrilled for the opportunity to get to watch the Sooners from the best seat in the house this season," said Rowland. "I'm a huge fan of Sunny and the program he's built. This is going to be a blast."
Joining Rowland on the air will be former Sooner Ross Hubbard (2009-2010), who began work as a color analyst for Oklahoma in 2011. In addition, Chris Plank, OU football's sideline reporter, and Craig Moran, Assistant Director of Athletics Communications at OU, will also fill in periodically throughout the season on play-by-play and color, respectively.
