NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 16 Oklahoma baseball team lost 10-2 against UT Arlington on Wednesday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. It marked just the second midweek loss at home for the Sooners in the last four years (lost to DBU in 2011).
The loss drops OU's overall record to 4-3 while UTA improved to 6-2.
The Mavericks struck first and took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and Preston Beck hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning off OU starter Jonathan Gray (0-2). That was all the UTA offense needed as the Sooners plated three runs in the game, two scored in the seventh inning.
Gray took the loss despite a season-high five innings pitched. He allowed five runs off seven hits.
“We're new and we're young and we have to develop an identity,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “It's not going to be the one that was revealed tonight. Unfortunately, you have to find a way to get a team's attention.”
UTA's Kasey Merck improved to 1-1 in the start with six scoreless innings. He helped give the Mavericks their second win of the season over a ranked opponent. UTA topped then No. 12 Texas, 7-5, last Tuesday in Austin.
Matt Oberste drove in the Sooners' first run in the seventh inning and Hunter Lockwood followed with a RBI single of his own. Lockwood finished with a season-high four hits and leads the team with 11 RBI.
The Sooners return to action over the weekend for a three game series at New Mexico. Game one between the Sooners and Lobos gets under way on Friday at 7 p.m. CT.
Friday's game will be joined in progress on the Sooner Sports Network KREF 1400 AM after the conclusion of the OU softball game (6 p.m.).
