ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The No. 16 Oklahoma baseball team led throughout the series opener on Friday until New Mexico tied it at six runs apiece in the ninth, but Jack Mayfield delivered a game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning to score Garrett Carey for the 7-6 Sooner victory.
The hard-fought win improved OU to 5-3 overall and was played in frigid weather in Albuquerque as the scoreboard read 32 degrees after the three-hour game. The Lobos dropped to 2-6 and have dropped six straight games to the Sooners.
Jordan John was credited with the win (3-1) and came in with runners on first and third after closer Damien Magnifico gave up a two-run single to left which cut the Sooner lead down to 6-5. With John on the mound, a balk was called that brought in the game-tying run.
Garrett Carey led off the 10th by reaching first on a close play at first base that was ruled an error on second baseman Michael Baca. He then reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Max White and came around to score on Mayfield's single to centerfield. Mayfield was 0-for-4 before coming up to the plate in the 10th.
New Mexico reliever Josh Walker took the hard-luck loss after giving up just one run in the final five innings.
OU plated five runs in the first inning off five hits, including a two-out, two-run single by Tanner Toal. Caleb Bushyhead, Evan Mistich and Max White connected on RBI singles before OU batted around in the inning.
In the fourth inning, Erik Ross' bunt single increased the Sooner advantage to 6-2. Ross finished with two base hits and Mistich and Toal both had three knocks in the game.
Despite a tough first inning and two unearned runs, OU starter Dillon Overton put together an impressive outing that featured a career high in innings pitched (8 2/3) and pitches (123), while tying a career high with eight strikeouts.
Overton faced seven batters in the first but rebounded and retired the side in order in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, and had two strikeouts in the ninth before giving way to Magnifico.
“I was disappointed that Dillon was not credited with the win, he deserved it with the way he pitched,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “I was proud of the way we started off with five runs in the first and then came back in the 10th after losing the lead. The conditions were not the easiest to play in but our guys displayed some mental toughness and earned the win.”
The Sooners and Lobos resume the series on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Isotopes Park. The game can be heard on the Sooner Sports Network KREF 1400 AM. OU's Steven Okert (1-0) will take the mound opposite the Lobos' Rudy Jamarillo (1-0).
