NORMAN, Okla. -- The latest renovation is complete at L. Dale Mitchell Park, the home of Oklahoma baseball. The project, the fourth renovation at the facility in the last five years, is highlighted by the addition of two rows of seating behind home plate which has increased the seating capacity to 3,180.

A new netting was installed behind home plate and, along with the two additional rows of seating, fans now have an even closer view of the action on the field, similar to the perspective at ONEOK Field in Tulsa. The project also featured the installation of field turf in the foul territory behind home plate and to the ends of the first and third base dugouts. Finally, a mixture of clay and brick material was laid down on the warning track in the outfield.

On Thursday, Feb. 23, fans can catch the first glimpse of the newly renovated L. Dale Mitchell Park as OU hosts Meet the Sooners Day. It marks the third consecutive year for the event which gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at a Sooner practice and an opportunity to purchase season tickets. The event will run from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. and will feature a meet and greet with players and coaches, autographs with the 2012 posters and schedule cards, and an opportunity to be on the field during batting practice.

The Sooners open the home slate this weekend against Hartford. The home opener on Friday, Feb. 24 will get underway at 3 p.m. Saturday's game is set for a 2 p.m. start and Sunday's finale is slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.

In January, OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway visited with SoonerSports.com to talk about the renovation and how it will improve the fans' experience at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Golloway also discusses past improvements to the facility and how that dedication from the University of Oklahoma and the Athletics Department has helped the program's pursuit of championships.

The construction began on Nov. 9 and is scheduled to be completed prior to the 2012 season.

The last renovation was completed prior to last season and included the installation of green chair back seats. In 2009, a state-of-the-art video board and sound system was installed to enhance the fan experience at the park.

In the fall of 2008, the baseball team opened a practice facility that featured indoor hitting cages and an outdoor practice infield. The $1 million project covers 22,500 square feet of existing ground at L. Dale Mitchell Park and is located down the left-field line adjacent to the Sooners' bullpen.

Named for the mid-1940s Sooner who still holds OU's career and single-season batting records, L. Dale Mitchell Park was dedicated prior to the 1982 season. Originally constructed at a cost of $1.27 million, the facility's second phase was completed in 2002.

With a $1.3 million price tag, the first phase of the renovation was completed during the 1998 season and included an upper concourse, additional restrooms and additional concession stands.

Phase two of the plan has provided new locker rooms, a training room facility and an equipment room for the Sooners.

Prior to the 2002 season, OU completed one of the final stages of the project as the press box facility underwent state-of-the-art improvements. The press box and radio broadcast booths were significantly expanded as well. VIP suites and a disability-accessible elevator were also added.
