NORMAN, Okla. -- The 27th-ranked Oklahoma women's golf team fired a final-round 311 (+27) Wednesday to finish in 13th place in the 15-team Northrop Grumman Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif. The Sooners totaled a 54-hole score of 931 (+79) at the par-71 Palos Verdes Golf Club course.
All 15 teams that participated in the Northrop Grumman Challenge are ranked in Golfweek's top 50, making it the most challenging tournament of the season thus far for the Sooners. Three teams are ranked in the top 10.
"This was a great tournament to play in," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. "We were very fortunate to get to compete against such excellent competition. We have some work to do in the next couple of days before we leave for Florida. I believe the girls learned a lot about their game and it should make them better players down the road."
No. 1 UCLA took home the title with a three-round 870 (+18), 12 strokes ahead of second-place USC. Duke's Lindy Duncan finished first out of 80 competitors and, with a 3-under 210, was the only golfer to finish the tournament under par.
Junior Taylor Schmidt led for the Sooners in the final round by carding a 2-over 73. Schmidt improved upon her second-round score by four strokes and climbed 16 spots to finish in a team-best 26th-place tie.
Sophomores Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Jade Staggs tied for 55th place with a 237 (+24) after each carded an 81 (+10) in the final round
Sophomore Emily Collins fired a 6-over 77 Wednesday, bringing her three round-total to 240 (+27). Collins finished in 68th place.
Anne-Catherine Tanguay finished one stroke behind Collins with a 54-hole total of 241. The sophomore fired a third-round 80 (+9) to finish in a tie for 69th place.
Oklahoma will be back in action Feb. 20-21 at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla.
