ITHACA, N.Y . – Mark Cody's 12th-ranked Sooners dominated American, 35-12, in the opening round of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals and will face No. 7 Illinois in second round action inside the Newman Arena on the campus of the University of Cornell.
The Sooners (13-3) won the first four bouts and eight overall to claim the win over Cody's former American (6-7) squad. Additionally, Oklahoma earned 10 bonus-points against the Eagles to help advance to the second round.
“It felt good to dominate them because when you look at how they beat Binghamton much worse than we did and have really been on a roll lately. Our guys stuck to the strategy and I guess it helps that I know these guys [at American] very well. That helps with the scouting that you do beforehand. Overall, I am proud of the effort and proud of the way they wrestled. They wrestled hard and this is the time of the year that we have to start making gains.”
Oklahoma's ninth-ranked Jarrod Patterson started the Sooners off with fall in 2:34 over American's Chris Brienza. Prior to the fall, Patterson acquired five takedowns.
In the 133 pound bout, OU's Jordan Keller gave the Sooners an 11-0 advantage over the Eagles after he earned a technical fall victory over AU's Corey Borshoff. Keller opened the bout with a barrage of takedowns (7) and two nearfalls. In the second, he added two more takedowns.
Kendric Maple, ranked No. 3, earned his second win of the year over American's 15th-ranked Matt Mariacher in the 141 pound bout. Maple earned a 9-2 win to help propel the Sooners ahead 14-0.
Nick Lester continued the winning streak for OU after he took down AU's Kevin Tao, 7-2, in the 149 pound bout.
American claimed wins in the 157 and 285 pound bouts where third-ranked Ganbayar Sanjaa and top-ranked Ryan Flores earned falls over OU's Matt Lester and Kyle Colling, respectively.
At 165 pounds, Bubby Graham earned a win over his former teammate, Mark Cirello. Graham's 4-point technical fall gave OU 21-6 advantage.
Kyle Detmer (174 pounds) and Keldrick Hall (197) finished off the scoring for OU after each earned bonus points for the Sooners. Detmer earned a fall in 2:33, while Hall upset AU's 19th-ranked Daniel Mitchell, 14-5.
“That was a huge win for Keldrick Hall. That was the first time in couple outings that he has beaten Danny Mitchell and every time he has been ahead of Danny and at the end has lost the match. Well, at the end of this match he went in there and scored five points instead of hanging out and waiting for something to happen. That was the difference for him in this dual.”
OU faces No. 7 Illinois at 11 a.m. CT today.
“I am happy with the overall effort and if we can take this into the next match we are going to the finals. If we don't take it into the next match then, bottom line we aren't going to the finals.”
