It took awhile, but Hook finally got up.
It took awhile for the Sooners Saturday, too, as they survived 64-60, edging the only winless team in the Big 12. While Oklahoma certainly didn't play the kind of game it will take to beat powerhouse Connecticut come Monday night, Hook and the Sooners played well enough when it counted most.
"All wins are good wins in the Big 12," OU head coach Sherri Coale said. "We're happy to get away with one today. We are very fortunate to get away with this one."
Forget that Missouri came in 0-11 in the Big 12, and forget the fact the Sooners may have been looking ahead to the 8 p.m. matchup with No. 3-ranked UConn Monday at Lloyd Noble Center.
Look to the final moments when OU made all the plays and kept Missouri from making any of them.
After Missouri's Brock made a running layup to make it a one-point Sooner lead with 21 seconds left, Hook made two free throws. Then, with a chance to tie on a 3-pointer, OU's Kaylon Williams blocked Liz Smith's shot. Williams went on to make one-of-two free throws putting the lead at four.
"Our team's achilles heel is putting ourselves in that situation," Coale said. "We've been good in tight situations down the stretch. We've done all that."
Meanwhile, despite struggling past 10-13 Missouri, OU did take care of the ball a lot better. The Sooners committed just 10 turnovers and made 19-of-23 free throws. OU improved to 16-7 overall and 8-4 in the Big 12.
However, OU shot just 38 percent for the game and let a 13-point lead slip all the way to just a one-point lead.
"It's incredibly frustrating," Coale said. "We got good shots and good looks. After awhile when you are missing and missing it takes your energy. That was really the story today. We got great shots and we missed them and it sucked the life out of us."
That's the bad news. But the good news is OU got eight points in just 10 minutes from DaShawn Harden off the bench. Whitney Hand had 17 points and Hook had 12.
"I didn't feel like we were out of tempo," Hand said. "But we couldn't really find the basket. I don't know if we're mature enough to overcome that. We need to make shots to feel a lot better."
