Ellenberg's Photos in OU Art Exhibit
All-American honorable mention basketball player and art photography major Aaryn Ellenberg's work is currently on display with other students from the OU School of Art and Art History. Two of Ellenberg's shots hanging in the Lightwell Gallery as part of "The Photography Show." The opening reception is Friday, April 12, from 5-7 p.m. and the exhibition runs until April 29.

Sooners at MDA Walk
Members of the OU women's basketball team used their free weekend between the Big 12 Championship and the NCAA Tournament to support the Oklahoma City MDA Walk at the COX Convention Center Saturday. The Sooners signed autographs and met fans who took park in the annual event.

Sooners Tour Tinker Air Force Base
The OU women's basketball team has deeply-rooted ties with the U.S. military through the service of player's families, or even its own alumna such as Caton Hill and Phylesha Whaley. The Sooners spent two days of their preseason being trained by a Navy SEAL Chief Special Warfare Operator and visited the USS Arizona and Oklahoma memorials at Pearl Harbor during its week in Hawaii for a tournament.

Last week, the Sooners reached out close to home by visiting Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City, Okla. OU toured the base before practicing and signing autographs for service members and their families at the Gerrity Fitness Center.

"To have this team give up their time and come here to spend time with our airmen and sailors and their families, it means a lot," 72nd Air Base Wing and Installation Commander Col. Steven J. Bleymaier said.

The 72nd Air Base Wing provides base installation and support services for the headquarters, Air Force Sustainment Center, the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex and 45 associate units assigned to six major commands, including the largest flying wing in Air Combat Command, the Navy's Strategic Communications Wing One and several defense agencies.

The Sooners also toured the flight line of the 552 Air Control Wing and stepped on board an E-3 Sentry commonly known as AWACS. The E-3 Sentry aircraft and is part of the Air Force's Air Combat Command mobile strike force. Its radar and other sensors provide deep-look surveillance, warning, interception control and airborne battle management.

Sooners Dive into OU's History of Science Collections
The Sooners took their second Campus Dive, their explorations of OU's on-campus treasures, touring the History of Science Collections on the fifth floor of the Bizzell Memorial Library under the guidance of the recently-retired Dr. Sul H. Lee, who served as Dean of the OU Library for 34 years, and librarian Dr. JoAnn Palmeri.

OU's History of Science Collections is one of the premier research collections in its field. Holdings of nearly 100,000 volumes from every field and subject area of science, technology and medicine range chronologically from Hrabanus Maurus, Opus de universo (1467) to current publications in the history of science. The Galileo collection includes all 12 first editions of Galileo, four of which contain his own handwriting.

It also includes the first English translation of Galileo, and many other first and later editions of the works of Galileo and his immediate contemporaries in the Accademia dei Lincei. The Darwin collection consists of all of Darwin's works in their first editions, and several autograph letters. In addition, it includes hundreds of subsequent editions and translations (for example, the Descent of Man in Yiddish, 1928).

Sooners Visit OU Children's Hospital
The OU women's basketball team made a visit to the OU Children's Hospital Monday to spread good tidings and holiday cheer to patients at the Jimmy Everest Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Children. Check out photos from one of the team's favorite stops each year.

Staffed by OU Children's Physicians the Jimmy Everest Center is a child's best resource in providing cancer and blood disorder treatment, along with emotional and mental support. The child-friendly center, which serves as a referral center for children throughout Oklahoma and the region, focuses on three main programs: the Cancer Treatment Program, the Oklahoma Hemophilia Treatment Center, and Sickle Cell Anemia Program. Other rarer blood disorders are also given treatment at the center.

Navy SEAL Training Begins Preseason | Video
The date was a coincidence. By the time the sun rose on the 11th anniversary of the terror attacks that stunned the world, the OU women's basketball team was well into their second hour of exercises with a Navy SEAL, a member of the Special Forces group that carried out the raid and captured Osama bin Laden.

By 7:10 a.m. when the first light peeked over the horizon, the Sooners stood in rank and file, shivering at attention in layers of sweat, mud, grass and, most recently, soaked in freezing cold water from nearby sprinklers. Finally approaching physical exhaustion, the lesson had just begun.

"Embrace the suck!" SEAL Chief Special Warfare Operator Rob Stella shouted into his megaphone.

For two days of preseason workouts, the 12-member women's basketball team joined its men's counterparts, members of OU ROTC, OU club lacrosse and a local high school baseball team for intense team-building lessons with Stella in the classroom and in the field. It's a program not available to the general public and one many of the U.S. Olympic teams who competed at the last two Games used as psychological preparation.

The goal is not often physical, but mental. The idea of the program, according to Stella, is to learn how to succeed through failure. Stella forces teams into modes of failure, squeezing individuals to their breaking points to determine who is truly committed to the team's mission. What is vital is how the athlete responds.

Sooners Take First "Campus Dive" at OU's Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art
In an effort to expose her team to all the treasures located on OU's campus, women's basketball coach Sherri Coale instituted the "Campus Dive" for the Sooners. Their first stop was the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, located on the northwest corner of the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman.

The nearly 16,000-object permanent collection includes the approximately 3,300-object Adkins Collection, the more than 4,000-object James T. Bialac Native American Art Collection, the Weitzenhoffer Collection of French Impressionism, 20th century American painting and sculpture, traditional and contemporary Native American art, art of the Southwest, ceramics, photography, contemporary art, Asian art and graphics from the 16th century to the present. Temporary exhibitions are mounted throughout the year which explore the art of various periods and cultures.
