NORMAN, Okla. -- The Sooner baseball team hasn't played a game yet. It hasn't had a chance to prove their top 25 ranking, either. However, despite the fact the calendar says mid February, Dillon Overton is seeing things quite clearly.

“We've got great chemistry,'' said the sophomore pitcher. “Everyone gets along. People seem to like each other and there's no griping or anything like that.''

Strong sentiments for this time of the year as the Sooners won't open their 2012 season until Feb. 17 with three games at Pepperdine.

But Overton is sure.

“We expect to win,” he said. “We can definitely make it to the College World Series. Every year, every team has that chance, but as the season goes along, people start acting different when games maybe don't go your way. I think we have a chance to make it if we keep our minds right.”

Last year, the Sooners followed up an appearance in the College World Series with a 16-0 start and a No. 2 ranking. But from there, things got tough. OU went winless in the NCAA regional and finished 41-19.

This season, Overton is one of 15 letterwinners returning, including seven starters. Oveton was a freshman All-American after going 8-4 and a 2.30 ERA and he is penciled in as the Sooners opening-day starter for 2012.

“We have a bunch of new guys, and no one knows what to expect,” Overton said. “But I really like what I've seen so far. We're just ready to start playing.”

Watch for fellow lefthander Jordan John (4-2, 2.35 in 2011) and newcomers Jonathan Gray, Damien Magnifico and Steven Okert to be impact pitchers. Magnifico has already hit 100-mph in practice games this fall and winter and he will likely serve as the Sooners' closer.

Meanwhile, senior shortstop Caleb Bushyhead and junior second baseman Jack Mayfield will be back, as will junior Max White, who will look to regain the form that helped him to be named to the freshman All-American in 2010.

“My main goal is to win a national championship,” Overton said. “Everybody here wants the same thing. I think this season we're going to have a lot of fun.”
