LARAMIE, Wyo. - The ninth-ranked Oklahoma wrestling squad fell to No. 18 Wyoming 18-17 on Tuesday night inside the Arena-Auditorium.

The Sooners (3-2-0, 2-1-0) won five bouts, but earned just two bonus points to the Cowboy's (1-2-0) three, which proved to be the difference in the dual. OU led 17-14 going into the night's final match where Wyoming's Patrick Martinez earned a major decision victory over Nolan Mcbryde to push Wyoming ahead.

"We got outcoached, outhustled and outwrestled," head coach Mark Cody said. "I'm hoping this is a wakeup call for some of the individuals in our program. We lost a close one and where we should have earned majors, we didn't. That's basically what cost us the match."

The dual began at 184 pounds with a showdown between OU's 16th-ranked Erich Schmidtke and Wyoming's No. 3 Joe LeBlanc. Schmidtke gave up two takedowns , five nearfalls and one reversal to drop the opening bout 18-3.

Wyoming jumped out to an 8-0 advantage after Wyoming's Alfonso Hernandez, ranked No. 12, edged the Sooners Keldrick Hall, 6-5. In the 197 pound bout, Hall led 5-3 late in the third period but gave up a stalling penalty and late takedown.

The Sooners' Kyle Colling put OU on the board after the redshirt freshman earned a major decision victory over the Cowboy's L.J. Helbig, 13-3, in the heavyweight bout. Colling tallied two nearfalls, two takedowns, an escape, added 3:16 of riding time and was awarded two points off penalties.

OU's fifth-ranked Jarrod Patterson dropped his first dual match of the season at the hands of Wyoming's No. 17-ranked Michael Martinez, 4-2, in the 125 pound matchup. The match was knotted at 1-1 to end regulation. Patterson lost in the second overtime due to a caution penalty and late escape.

Trailing the Cowboy's 11-4, OU's No. 12 ranked Jordan Keller gave the Sooners their second win of the night in the 133 pound match. Keller earned an escape and 1:17 of riding time to earn the 2-1 win over Wyoming's Zach Zehner, ranked No. 14.

The reigning Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, Kendric Maple, kept his perfect season intact after earning a 6-1 win over the Cowboy's Michael Hamel. Maple, ranked No. 7, tallied two takedowns, an escape and 1:29 of riding time in the 141 pound bout.

Nick Lester gave OU its first lead of the night, 13-11, after he claimed an 8-1 victory by decision over Wyoming's Brandon Richardson. The Sooners 12th-ranked 149 pounder posted a takedown and 3-point nearfall in the first period. In the third, Lester had a takedown and added 1:02 of riding time. Richardson's only point came on a stalling penalty given to Lester with 0:05 remaining.

OU's lead grew to 17-11 at the conclusion of the 157 pound bout via a Matt Lester victory by major decision over UW's Dakota Friesth, 16-4. Lester, ranked No. 11, acquired two takedowns, seven-points off nearfalls, two escapes, a reversal and 2:56 of riding time.

Wyoming's sixth-ranked Shane Onufer tallied two takedowns, two escapes and 1:43 of riding time on his way to a 7-3 win over the Sooners' Bubby Graham who had a takedown and escape of his own.

The Sooners dropped the final bout of the night, giving the Cowboy's a one-point win over the Sooners after Wyoming's Martinez, ranked No. 15 by AWN,  downed OU's McBryde, 15-2, in the 174 pound matchup.

"My hope is that we can learn from this and go forward," Cody explained. "I hope they will take this loss to heart."

Up next, The Sooners head to Annapolis, MD., to take on Navy on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 6:30 p.m., and Binghamton on Sunday, Jan. 10.
