Wrestling alongside the fifth-ranked OU women's gymnastics team in front of a Beauty and the Beast record crowd of 2,492 fans, Oklahoma improved to 11-2 on the year after taking six bouts over the Hokies (6-4).
"Beating a top 25 team is always good," Mark Cody said. "I think we came out a little flat and maybe the day off yesterday didn't do us well. We did that last week too before we wrestled Iowa State and I felt like we wrestled flat in that match too. The good news is that I think we will wrestle better on Sunday. Every time we have come out flat like that, then the next dual we come out and fight."
The Sooners opened the dual with a battle at 125 pounds between OU's seventh-ranked Jarrod Patterson and Virginia Tech's Erik Spujt. Patterson had three takedowns, an escape and added 1:12 of riding time to earn an 8-2 win.
Virginia Tech's top-ranked Devin Carter evened the score after he earned an 8-4 decision over OU's 11th-ranked Jordan Keller. Carter tallied four takedowns, while Keller was only able to score on four escapes.
With the score tied, 3-3, third-ranked Kendric Maple earned the only bonus point of the night after he fought for a major decision over VT's No. 19-ranked Zach Neibert, 13-1. In the bout, Maple acquired three takedowns, five nearfall points, an escape and 3:25 of riding time.
The Hokie's Nick Brascetta took the 149 pound bout over the Sooners' No. 9-ranked Nick Lester. Lester held a 3-0 lead after he earned a quick escape in the third, but he was penalized for stalling and was taken down by Brascetta with 0:14 remaining. In overtime, Lester gave up a takedown with 0:17 remaining to drop the bout, 5-3.
OU held a 7-6 advantage over VT heading into the 157 pound which pitted OU's 15th-ranked Matt Lester against the Hokie's Cameron Hurd. Lester held a 2-0 lead going into the second period where he added a reversal and 3-point nearfall before giving up a reversal to Hurd. Lester closed out scoring by adding 1:10 of riding time to earn the 8-2 decision.
Bubby Graham gave OU a 13-6 lead after he earned a 10-3 victory by decision over Virginia Tech's Matt Stephens in the 165 pound bout. Graham earned four takedowns, an escape and added 2:44 of riding time, while Stephen's only points came on escapes.
Virginia Tech's Chris Moon gave the Hokie's its third win of the night after he defeated OU's Nolan McBryde 5-1 in the 174 pound bout. Moon held a 2-0 lead after the first before McBryde earned an escape to start the second. Moon added a takedown in the second and an escape in the third to take the match.
In the 184 pound bout, OU's Erich Schmidtke never trailed VT's John Dickson where he earned a 13-10 victory. Schmidtke held a 5-3 advantage following the first period. In the second, Schmidtke had a quick escape and added a takedown before getting reversed by Dickson. Schmidtke escaped and was taken down again. Schmidkte closed out the period with a point for an illegal hold called on Dickson. In the third, Schmidkte gave up an escape and reversal, but added a takedown and escape of his own to earn the victory.
OU extended its lead, 19-9, after Keldrick Hall handed the Hokie's Angelo Malvestuto a 15-8 loss. Hall tallied two takedowns and an escape in the first period and an escape in the third. In the final period, Hall added four takedowns and 1:24 of riding time.
Virginia Tech claimed the final bout of the night in the heavyweight showdown between OU's Kyle Colling and VT's Chris Penny. Penny had two takedowns in the first two periods, while Colling's points came on a Penny stalling penalty and 1:27 of riding time.
"The event was awesome," Cody said of his first Beauty and the Beast. "It was a really neat atmosphere and I hope that we can draw some fans from this event and that gymnastics can draw some wrestling fans. Both sports are a lot alike and are very technical."
Following Beauty and the Beast, OU will host No. 14 Lehigh (8-4) on Sunday at noon.
