Sooners Remain Top-Ranked Team in Land

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Sooners remain the top-ranked team in the land after the opening weekend of college football. Oklahoma defeated Tulsa, 47-14, Saturday night on Owen Field in front of a record crowd of 85,260 in Norman.
 
OU was No. 1 in the latest USA Today Coaches Poll with 1,454 votes and increased its number of first-place votes to 43. Alabama, LSU, Florida State and Boise State rounded out the Top 5. 
 
The Sooners will face five teams currently ranked in the Coaches Top 25: No. 4 Florida State on Sept. 17 in Tallahassee, No. 7 Oklahoma State at Stillwater, No. 8 Texas A&M in Norman, No. 19 Missouri in Norman and No. 21 Texas in Dallas. Baylor just missed at No. 26 after its upset of then-No. 14 TCU in Waco.
 
In the AP Poll, OU notched its 99th week at No. 1 since the poll began in 1936. No team has been ranked in the top spot more than the Sooners. Six opponents made the Top 25 including No. 5 Florida State, No. 7 Texas A&M, No. 9 Oklahoma State, No. 20 Baylor, No. 21 Missouri and No. 24 Texas.
 
Oklahoma has a bye this weekend before hitting the road to face Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. ABC announced that the matchup will be a national broadcast with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. CT.
 
ESPN's College GameDay will be on site for its 26th Sooner game. The Sooners have been featured on the program more than any other team after Florida (32) and Ohio State (29).
