Five Sooners Advance to Round of 16

WACO, Texas - Five Sooners advanced to the Round of 16 and three tandems will compete in the doubles quarterfinals after OU put on a stellar performance to open the HEB-Baylor Invitational at the Hurd Tennis Center on the University of Baylor campus.

Oklahoma junior Costin Paval, the top seed, rolled through the competition as he took out St. Edwards Ned Boone and Rice's Michael Nuesslein in straight sets. Paval will face NMSU's Marc Westgate Saturday in the Round of 16.

OU sophomore Peerakit Siributwong, the No. 6 seed, had two straight set victories over UTPA's Ricardo Hopker and UTA's Soren Gortizka. The Thailand native will battle Northwestern's Spencer Wolf Saturday.

Tsvetan Mihov began the day upsetting the tournament's fifth-overall seed in Northwestern's Josh Graves and defeated Laredo's Bruno Klanskinic in his second match of the day. Mihov, a sophomore from Bulgaria, will take on Baylor freshman Lars Behlen on Saturday.

Newcomers Dane Webb and Guillermo Alcorta opened the fall season with straight set victories over their first two opponents. Webb will challenge Fresno State's No. 4-seeded Remi Boutillier, while Alcorta takes on Ull's Yanick Mandl in the Round of 16.

All three OU duos took care of business in the first and second rounds of the doubles draw to advance to quarterfinal action Saturday.

Paval and Webb, the No. 3 seed, will take on Arizona's Urquidi and Vidaller. Third seeded Alcorta and Lawrence Formentera's opponents are still to be determined, while Mihov and Siributwong look to take down the No. 2 seed in Iowa's Bruche and Vasos. All three quarterfinal matches are slated to begin at 9 a.m.
