OU scored on six of its first nine possessions and racked up 526 yards of total offense. Defensively, OU held the Tigers, who entered the game averaging 455 yards and 34 points, to just 10 first downs and 198 total yards. |
![]() Billy Sims had a career-day and OU escaped with the win when Missouri missed a 37-yard field goal attempt late in the game. Sims, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, racked up 282 yards on the ground to single-handedly carry the Sooners to victory. OU went to defeat Nebraska the following week to secure its ninth straight Big Eight title. |
![]() Joe Washington saved the game, the Big Eight title and OU's fifth national title. Trailing 27-20 with under five minutes remaining, the Sooners faced a 4th-and-one deep in its own territory. That's when "Little Joe" darted 71 yards to bring the Sooners within one, then plunged into the end zone on the ensuing two-point conversion to give Oklahoma a 28-27 victory. ![]() All 55 Sooner players got in on the action and eight of them crossed the goal line as OU rolled, 67-14. The victory vaulted Oklahoma back to the top of the AP poll. The win was also Oklahoma's 39th straight, tying the record for all-time consecutive wins set by the Washington Huskies from 1908-1914. Of course, the Sooners won eight more before their streak came to an end. |
