NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's golf team is tied for seventh place after posting a first-round score of 315 (+27) Sunday in the 12-team season-opening "Mo"Morial Invitational in Bryan, Texas.
The Sooners trail first-place Auburn by 19 shots at the 6,260-yard, par-72 Traditions Golf Club, which was also the site of last year's NCAA Women's Championship. Auburn leads second-place Kentucky and Texas by three strokes with 36 holes remaining.
"We got off to a slow start and had trouble coming back from it," said third-year OU head coach
Veronique Drouin. "But we still have a lot of golf left. We just need to play with more confidence. We had some great rounds before we got here and anything can happen in the next two days."
OU sophomores
Chirapat Jao-Javanil and
Anne-Catherine Tanguay and junior
Taylor Schmidt are all tied for 20th place after each recorded a first-round 78 (+6). They are eight shots behind co-leaders Ashleigh Albrecht of Kentucky and Carlie Yadloczky of Auburn. Schmidt is competing as an individual.
In her first action as a Sooner, sophomore
Jade Staggs registered birdies on holes 6 and 7 and finished with a score of 79 (+7). The Oklahoma State transfer is tied for 31st out of 68 competitors.
Junior college transfer
Jacki Marshall, also making her OU debut, is tied for 37th place after carding an 80 (+8). Marshall stood at 8 over par through her first 11 holes before shooting even par over the final seven.
Brooke Collins, OU's lone senior, finished the day with a score of 82 (+10) and is tied for 54th place.
Oklahoma is playing without sophomore
Emily Collins due to illness. Collins competed in the U.S. Women's Open this summer in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The "Mo"Morial Invitational second round is scheduled to begin Monday morning with the Sooners teeing off at 8:54. The final round will be held Tuesday. Live stats are available at
