CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The 18th-ranked University of Oklahoma volleyball team ran into a roadblock Saturday evening as Miami's defense gave the Hurricanes a 3-1 win in the championship match of the Hurricane Invitational (25-17, 17-25, 24-26, 19-25).
Miami out-dug Oklahoma 90-78 and registered 62 kills to OU's 55. The Sooners (9-2) hit .241 for the match with a set-best .491 in the first set. Suzy Boulavsky led Oklahoma with 15 kills, while Sallie McLaurin added 13. McLaurin hit .462 to lead OU. A trio of Sooners registered double-digit digs with Maria Fernanda leading the way with 28.
Brianne Barker had another double-double with 41 assists and a season-high 15 digs. Barker added one of OU's five service aces. Fernanda (1), Eden Williams (1) and Mindy Gowen (2) had the others. Caitlin Higgins closed out her weekend with nine kills against the Hurricanes. Morgan Reynolds added eight and Barker and Grace Whitley had five each.
Barker and Boulavsky earned all-tournament team honors. Boulavsky led the Sooners with 3.10 kills per set on the weekend. She hit .312 and added nine total blocks. Barker averaged 10.00 assists and 2.67 digs per set.
Lane Carico earned the tournament's most valuable player award after registering a match-high 19 kills. Carico also added 16 digs as one of five Hurricanes with double-digit digs. Alex Johnson, an all-tournament team selection, led in digs with 19. Katie Gallagher was also named to the all-tournament team and led UM with 48 assists. Emani Sims led Miami with four block assists as the Hurricanes out-blocked OU 7.0-6.0.
