Roy Williams Joins OU Radio Crew

NORMAN, Okla. -- Former Oklahoma All-American Roy Williams is joining the Sooner Radio Network this fall as a pregame show host. He'll also work on the sideline during home games and selected road games as an analyst.

In both roles, he'll work alongside Chris Plank.

"I want to be the players' voice," Williams said. "Sometimes, fans may not understand a coverage or a subtle mistake that was made and I think I can offer that insight. This is a great opportunity to come back and be involved. It's going to be fun."

Williams, a native Californian who resides in Oklahoma City, said he is not officially retired yet from the NFL, but likes the current direction of his life.

"My body is telling me that I am making the right moves, but if the right offer came along I guess I'd have to think about (playing again)," he said. "I've got a new daughter and 10 years from now, I want to be able to get out of bed in the morning and play with her. Right now, I can do that. I wake up every morning smiling."

Williams was a member of the 2000 national championship team with OU. He entered the NFL Draft after his junior season of 2001. He was taken in the first round as the No. 8 overall pick by the Dallas Cowboys. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2006. In 2009, he signed a free agent deal with Cincinnati and played for the Bengals in the 2010 season.

In 2001, Williams became the first college player to win the Bronko Nagurski Award (best defensive player) and Jim Thorpe Award (best defensive back) in the same season. Another Sooner, Derrick Strait, duplicated the feat in 2003.

Williams is Oklahoma's all-time leader in pass deflections for a season with 22 in 2001. He broke up 44 passes in his career, which ranks No. 2. His 287 career tackles rank No. 3 on the Sooners' list.
