SOONERS CONCLUDE 2011 RANKED NO. 24
The Sooners finished 2011 at 41-19 overall and in third place in the Big 12 play at 14-11. OU won 40 regular season games for the third straight year, a first since 1989, and made the program's fourth straight NCAA tournament appearance (34th overall). OU was No. 24 in the final National Collegiate Baseball Writer's poll and was ranked each week of the 2011 season.
The OU pitching staff finished with a 3.00 earned run average while hitters combined for a .313 clip at the plate. The Sooners have hit over .300 in each of the last six seasons and the team ERA was the lowest since 1978 (2.66).
Oklahoma was picked to finish first in the Big 12 standings for the first time since 1995 and started the year with a 16-0 record, the best start in program history. However, the Sooners ended the 2011 season with three straight losses. The final two defeats came in the NCAA Forth Worth Regional as OU recorded its first 0-2 showing in the tournament since 2002 (Wichita Regional). OU had reached the regional final in each of the previous five NCAA appearances under head coach Sunny Golloway (2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010) and returned most of the squad from the 2010 College World Series team.
"It's a frustrating end for us, there's no doubt," said Golloway. "It's a frustrating end to, I think, a little bit of a frustrating season. We had some high expectations and we just didn't live up to them. We're looking forward to next year."
2011 DRAFT RECAP
OU will feature some new faces in 2012 as 11 players were drafted this June, a mark that led the Big 12 and marks the most taken in program history, topping the 10 selected in 1998 and 1995. The 11 selections ranked in a tie for second place in the nation behind Vanderbilt (12). Arizona State, Florida and South Carolina also had 11 while Texas was eight with nine selections. The most players drafted in the Sunny Golloway era was nine, accomplished twice in 2009 and 2006. Overall, 43 Sooners have been drafted on Golloway's watch, including at least four in every season but one. In addition, 22 of the players came to Norman undrafted in their careers. Of the 11 Sooners taken in 2011, eight were selected for the first time and two others improved their draft status by at least
four rounds.
THREE MORE ALL-AMERICANS
The Sooners concluded 2011 by adding three more All-Americans to its history. Michael Rocha was tabbed a second team All-American by Collegiate Baseball, Tyler Ogle was selected as a third team All-American by Baseball America and Dillon Overton was named a Freshman All-American (Collegiate Baseball).
Rocha and Ogle are the 52nd and 53rd All-Americans in OU history, marking six under head coach Sunny Golloway' watch. It also marks the third straight year that a Sooner appeared on one of the All-America lists, joining J.T. Wise, Jamie Johnson and Ryan Duke in 2009 and Garrett Buechele in 2010. There have also been nine freshman All-Americans at OU, including five under Golloway's watch since 2005 (Kody Kaiser-2005, Aaron Baker-2007, Garrett Buechele - 2009 and Max White-2010).
MISC NOTES
- Sunny Golloway recorded his 250th career win at OU on April 26 at TCU. Golloway is fourth on OU's wins list with 261.
- OU has won 40 games in the regular season for the third straight year, a first since 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989.
- After 60 games, OU leads the Big 12 in batting average (.313), and ranks third in earned run average (3.00) and fielding percentage (.973).
- OU is the only team in the conference to own a team batting average over .300.
- OU led the conference with 415 runs, the next closest team, Texas A&M, has scored 405 runs. OU was second in the Big 12 in hits with 632 behind Texas A&M with 676.
- The Sooner offense outscored the opposition 415-225.
- Garrett Buechele, the Big 12 Player of the Week on Feb. 21 and28, led the Big 12 with 63 RBIs. He ranks eighth in hits (77).
- In 35 of the Sooners' 60 starts, the hurlers have lasted at least five innings, including seven complete games by Jordan John, Bobby Shore and Michael Rocha (5). OU owns seven ofthe 26 complete games tossed in the Big 12 in 2011.
- Michael Rocha and the Sooner bullpen limited the Tribe to one hit on Feb. 18, 2011, the fewest allowed since OU's last no-hitter, a combined effort on March 9, 2005 vs. UAPB.
- Rocha struck out 13 batters in the March 18 shutout vs.Texas A&M, the most by a Sooner since Daniel McCutchen also sat down 13 Aggies on April 7, 2006.
- Rocha, a two-time 2011 Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, lasted at least seven innings in 12 of his 16 starts. He led the Big 12 with five complete games and ranked fourth with a 1.75 ERA and third with 10 wins.
- Burch Smith was also third in the conference with 10 wins. The last time OU had a pair of 10-game winners was in 2006 when Steven Guerra (11-4) and Daniel McCutchen (10-8) led the Sooners to the Houston Super Regional. The feat has happened six times in program history, twice in Golloway era.
