NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma women's golf team carded a 300 (+12) in the second round of the NCAA West Regional Friday at the par-72 Washington National Golf Course in Auburn, Wash., to climb into a tie for 13th place with a two-day total of 616 (+40).
In order to advance to the NCAA Championship, Oklahoma must finish in the top eight of the 24-team field. The Sooners are 13 strokes behind eighth place Texas A&M and Oregon.
“We played much better today and sunk a lot more putts,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “We have 18 holes left and need to play our absolute best. Anything is possible. I have complete faith in the team that we will do everything in our power to compete for a spot in the NCAA Championship.”
The Sooners began the round in 20th place with a first-round score of 316 (+28) before climbing seven spots and improving their score by 16 strokes, tying OU's largest round-to-round score improvement of the season.
Junior Brooke Collins fired a team-best 73 (+1), paring 15 holes in Friday's round. Collins began the round tied for 104th place after shooting an 82 (+10) in the opening round but was able to jump into a tie for 60th place with her nine-stroke improvement.
Also shooting a lower round was senior Ellen Mueller. Mueller shot a 74 (+2) Friday, five strokes better than her Thursday total of 79. The senior moved up 33 spots in the player leaderboard and is tied for 45th place.
Leading the Sooners in the 124-player field is freshman Chirapat “Ja” Jao-Javanil. The freshman shot a second-round 76 (+4) and is tied for 37th place with a two-day total of 151 (+7).
Anne-Catherine Tanguay is tied for 73rd with a 36-hole total of 157 (+13) and Emily Collins is tied for 118th with a 165 (+21).
First-place USC posted a 36-hole total of 572 (-4) and leads second-place Tennessee by seven strokes.
A total of 378 golfers have been selected for NCAA regional competition at three sites. Of those participants, 126 will advance to the championship finals. At each regional, the top eight team finishers and top two individuals not playing on the eight qualifying teams will earn bids to the 2011 NCAA Women's Golf Championship May 18-21 at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
