NORMAN, Okla. -- The 2011 Sooner soccer schedule was released on Wednesday, May 25 by University of Oklahoma Vice President/Athletics Director Joe Castiglione and head coach Nicole Nelson.
Overall, the Sooners will play seven games against six teams that were also in the 2010 postseason field of 64.
The Sooners return all but three starters from the 2010 team that won 12 games and advanced to the final game of the Big 12 Championship and the program's second NCAA tournament appearance.
"The 2011 schedule is exciting," said Nelson, the 2010 Co-Big 12 Coach of the Year. "It features an aggressive approach to our non-conference segment that, if we handle well, will give us the opportunity to achieve our postseason goals. The 2011 team has a good balance, concerning talent and experience, so I expect them to embrace the season with determination and excitement."
The 2011 slate consists of 19 regular season games, including 10 contests at one of the premier collegiate soccer facilities in the nation, John Crain Field at the OU Soccer Complex. The Sooners will play one exhibition game on Aug. 13 at Arkansas before the season kicks off on Aug. 19.
The season opener is slated for Friday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. against the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the first series meeting between the Sooners and Blazers. Two days later, OU hosts Tennessee at 1 p.m. in the first meeting between the two since the 2003 NCAA Knoxville Regional.
The third game of the 2011 campaign marks one of the many highlights of the schedule as it features the first of two match-ups with in-state rival Oklahoma State. This season marks the second time that the Bedlam Soccer Series will be played in the regular season on both home fields. The Sooners and Cowgirls will play a non-conference game in Stillwater on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. OSU will return to the trip to Norman for the Big 12 showdown in the season finale on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.
The non-conference slate also features OU hosting SMU (Aug. 28), ORU (Sept. 2), Missouri State (Sept. 4) and Brigham Young (Sept. 27). In addition, the Sooners will be traveling to Tempe, Ariz., to face Arizona State and Arizona and they conclude the non-conference portion of the slate on Sept. 23 at New Mexico.
Arizona State, Brigham Young and New Mexico each advanced to the 2010 NCAA Championship along with Big 12 foes Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas A&M.
Big 12 play kicks off on Friday, Sept. 30 at home against Oklahoma State and the Sooners will complete the weekend on Oct. 2 in Norman against Texas Tech. Oklahoma will also host Iowa State (Oct. 14) and Missouri (Oct. 16) in league play.
The challenges on the road include Texas (Oct. 7), Texas A&M (Oct. 21), Baylor (Oct. 23) and Kansas (Oct. 28).
The Big 12 Championship (Nov. 2-6) will once again be held in San Antonio, Texas at the Blossom Soccer Stadium. The top eight teams will compete in a single-elimination tournament to determine the conference's champion and the automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Last season, OU fell 5-4 in the title game in penalty kicks to Oklahoma State, who eventually advanced to the Elite 8 round of the NCAA tournament.
The 64-team field in the NCAA Championship start things off on Nov. 11 and conclude the tourney on Dec. 4 at the Women's College Cup in Kennesaw, Ga. at the KSU Soccer Stadium.
While OU lost three starters in seniors Lauren Alkek, Tiana Dickson and Palmer, it returns eight starters and 19 letterwinners from a team that was one win shy of tying the program record for wins and posted the program's top finish in Big 12 play in third place.
