Overton Tabbed Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

NORMAN, Okla. -- Freshman Dillon Overton collected his first Big 12 weekly honor on Monday as the conference office tabbed him the Newcomer of the Week for games played through May 1. The Weatherford, Okla., native went 2-0 last week with a pair of wins on the road at No. 7 TCU and No. 4 Texas.
It represents the seventh time a Sooner has been recognized by the Big 12 this season, a league best. In 2011, Tyler Ogle was named the player of the week (April 18), Garrett Buechele has twice been named the player of the week (Feb. 21 and 28), Michael Rocha was tabbed the pitcher of the week twice (March 7 and April 4) and Jordan John was tabbed the newcomer of the week (Feb. 28).
Along with Overton, Texas' Taylor Jungmann and Texas Tech's Stephen Hagen were named the pitcher and player of the week, respectively. A panel of media that covers the conference conducts the voting each week.
In two appearances last week, Overton tossed 8 2/3 innings with three hits allowed (.107 opponent batting average) and a 1.04 ERA with six strikeouts. He appeared out of the bullpen in both appearances and tossed 4.0 innings at TCU on Tuesday with one run and one hit allowed to go along with three strikeouts. On Sunday, Overton tossed 4 2/3 relief innings against the Longhorns to improve to 7-3 on the season. He only surrendered two hits to Texas and struck out three batters.
The left hander has been outstanding out of the Sooner bullpen. In 11 relief appearances, Overton is 5-1 with a 0.53 ERA (two earned runs) with 29 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched.
Overton has defeated three ranked opponents this year (then-No. 25 Oklahoma State) and ranks second on the team with seven wins. Overton ranks fifth in the Big 12 with seven victories and also ranks fifth with a 1.75 ERA.
The Sooners return to action with a road game at Arkansas Little Rock on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Over the weekend, Oklahoma hosts Kansas in a three-game Big 12 Conference series.
