NORMAN, Okla. - Junior catcher Tyler Ogle was named one of 13 semifinalists for the 2011 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award delivered by Papa John's Pizza Thursday, as announced by The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.
Ogle is the second Sooner catcher in the last three seasons to appear on the list after J.T. Wise became the program's first winner of the award in 2009. Ogle also appeared on the watch list for the award in 2010.
In 2011, Ogle ranks in the top 10 in six offensive categories in the Big 12, including the No. 2 spot in homers with nine, while throwing out 19 of 55 potential base stealers.
The San Antonio, Texas, native has started 48 of OU's 52 games behind the plate and is hitting .339 with 42 RBI, 99 total bases, a .569 slugging percentage and a .455 on-base percentage.
Ogle was named Big 12 Player of the Week and National Player of the Week (NCBWA) for first time on April 18 after collecting 11 base hits (3 HR) and 11 RBI in four games played against TCU and Oklahoma State. In the last 24 games, he is hitting .364 (36-for-99) with 25 RBI and six homers.
Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 6, 2011. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series.
All finalists will be brought to Wichita and Johnny Bench will present the award at the 14th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 30, 2011.
Bench's career honors include: National League Rookie of the Year (1968); National League Most Valuable Player (1970, 1972); World Series Most Valuable Player (1976); 14-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner. In 1980, he set an endurance record by catching 100+ games for 13 consecutive seasons.
Bench was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in January 1989 with the fourth highest percentage of total votes cast
