NORMAN, Okla. - Down to its final two outs, the 14th-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team rallied to score three runs and defeat 17th-ranked Baylor 3-2 Saturday afternoon at the OU Softball Complex.
Destinee Martinez's only hit of the day came in the seventh, scoring Chana'e Jones and Javen Henson to tie the game. With runners at the corners, Jessica Shults' sacrifice line drive to center field scored Brianna Turang to give OU the 3-2 victory.
Keilani Ricketts moved to 19-6 on the year. Ricketts threw a complete game, allowing the two earned runs on five hits and one walk. She struck out eight.
The first innings of the game were scoreless despite the Sooners loading the bases in the bottom of the first. Ricketts held the Lady Bears to two hits in the first four frames and didn't allow either runner to reach second.
Baylor got the game's first run in the top of the fifth. Holly Holl led off with a double to left center and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on Kelsi Kettler's bloop single to left center. The Lady Bears added another run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Megan Turk. After OU left the bases loaded a second time in the sixth, the Sooners faced their final three outs in the seventh.
Katie Norris led off the inning with a single down the right field line and runner Henson moved to second on a walk by Jones. Henson then stole third and an infield single from Turang loaded the bases for Martinez. After reaching base on two errors previously in the game, Martinez's first hit of the afternoon tied the game before Turang came in to score on Shults' line drive sacrifice fly.
Turang, Haley Nix and Norris each ended the game 2-for-3. Martinez registered OU's other hit. Shults, Dani Dobbs and Jones drew the walks off Baylor starter Whitney Canion.
Canion (16-5) pitched the 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits. She struck out four. Turk led the Lady Bears at the plate, going 2-for-3. Dani Leal and Holl had the other BU hits.
The two teams close out the series Sunday at noon CT at the OU Softball Complex. The game airs statewide on Cox Channel 3 in Oklahoma City and Tulsa and locally on KREF 1400 AM.
