NORMAN, Okla. - After taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth, the 14th-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team was unable to maintain it as the Sooners fell to 17th-ranked Baylor 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.
OU got on the board with a leadoff solo home run by Brittany Williams and Chana'e Jones scored on a two-out single by Haley Nix to lead 2-1 after five. The Sooners (32-11, 5-3 Big 12) allowed the Lady Bears (31-7, 5-3 Big 12) to rally and score four runs in the top of the sixth to win 5-2.
Keilani Ricketts (19-7) threw her second consecutive complete game, allowing the five runs, two of them earned. Ricketts walked one and struck out 11.
Ricketts and Baylor starter Whitney Canion kept both offenses off the board through the first three innings. Ricketts allowed just two base runners in those frames. Canion allowed OU to have a runner at third in the second and third innings but the Sooners were unable to show for it on the scoreboard. Four of OU's eight base hits came in the first three innings.
Baylor broke the ice in the fourth as Megan Turk reached on a leadoff double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Turk then scored on a fielder's choice by Holly Holl to give the Lady Bears the early 1-0 lead.
OU responded with the two runs in the fifth. The solo shot by Williams ended her series hitless drought and was her 10th home run of the year. Jones' double was her 10th of the year, bringing her one shy of her single-season best set in 2010.
Baylor answered OU's lead by regaining it in the top of the sixth. Kathy Shelton led off with a single and stole second before Kayce Walker also reached on a single. A double steal put runners at first and second for the Lady Bears and an intentional one-out walk to Dani Leal loaded the bases. After getting Holl to fly out, K.J. Freeland came through with a single through the left side to score Shelton.
Clare Hosack then reached after striking out on a passed ball that would have ended the inning and the Lady Bears got back-to-back singles from Kelsi Kettler and Sydney Wilson to push the lead to its eventual final score, 5-2.
Canion (17-5) also threw a complete game, holding the Sooners to two runs on eight hits. She struck out seven. Walker led the Lady Bears, going 2-for-4 with one run scored.
The top of the order continued to produce for the Sooners as Brianna Turang and Destinee Martinez each had two hits for OU.
Oklahoma closes out the current homestand on Wednesday evening against 21st-ranked Oklahoma State. The game airs statewide on Cox Channel 3 and locally on KREF 1400 AM.
