NORMAN, Okla. – The 20th-ranked Oklahoma women's golf team fired an even-par 288 Sunday in the final round of the 23-team Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. The Sooners' totaled a 54-hole score of 887 (+23) to finish in 16th place.
Oklahoma finished ahead of three top-40 opponents in its toughest tournament this season. The Liz Murphey featured 14 top-25 teams, including five ranked in the top 10. All but four of the 23 competing schools are ranked in the top 40.
“Overall, the girls played a lot better today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “We made some putts early and hit the ball well. It was by far our best round of the tournament. We still have some areas of our short game we need to tweak in preparation for our next tournament.”
The Liz Murphey featured a unique format in which all five competitors from each school played together on each hole (as opposed to seeded players from three or four teams playing together). A team's score for each hole was determined by the lowest four scores on that hole. Individuals' total scores were used in the player standings.
Freshman Chirapat “Ja” Jao-Javanil finished in a team-best 43rd place with a three-round total of 228 (+12). Jao-Javanil has led the Sooners for best individual finish in each of the past four tournaments. The Liz Murphey was the first of her eight career collegiate tournaments in which she didn't place in the top 15.
Freshman Anne-Catherine Tanguay finished two strokes behind Jao-Javanil, firing a 230 (+14) to tie for 54th place.
Junior Brooke Collins and freshman Emily Collins tied for 63rd place after each shot a 232 (+16). Senior Ellen Mueller tied for 85th with a 236 (+20).
OU's finish in the Liz Murphey marked the first time this season Drouin's squad finished outside the top 10. The Sooners have finished in the top three in six of their eight tournaments.
Oklahoma will compete in its final tournament of the regular season April 11-12 at the Baylor Lady Bear Invitational in Waco, Texas.
