COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Oklahoma women's golf team shot a third-round 297 (+9) Sunday to finish in fifth place at the Big 12 Championship in Columbia, Mo. OU finished the 54-hole event 16 shots behind champion Texas at the 6,234-yard, par-72 course at The Club at Old Hawthorne.
Despite rainy and windy conditions for much of the tournament, the Sooners' three-round 888 (+24) represented their best ever score in the 15-year history of the Big 12 Championship, topping their previous event low of 912 in 2002 when they finished in second place.
"It was a tough way to end the tournament," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin of the final 18 holes. "It was raining for a majority of today's round and we weren't able to sink key birdie putts.
"But I'm proud of how far the team has come this year and now we need to focus on preparing for NCAA regionals."
Freshman Chirapat "Ja" Jao-Javanil was OU's best scorer on the day and on the weekend. Jao-Javanil shot a 1-over 73 Sunday to finish the tournament tied for 10th place. The 3-over-par 54-hole effort marked her ninth top-15 finish in her 10 events this year, and was her fourth top-10 finish in the last five tournaments.
Senior Ellen Mueller finished in a 14th-place tie after shooting a final-round 76 (+4). The 6-over three-day performance resulted in her 26th career top-20 finish and her eighth of the year.
Freshman Emily Collins entered the day tied for 24th place following her second-round 70 (-2) but carded a final-round 78 (+6) and tied for 32nd at +11.
Junior Brooke Collins fired a 2-over 74 Sunday and climbed nine spots on the leaderboard to tie for 35th place at +12.
Freshman Anne-Catherine Tanguay's third-round 74 was her best score of the weekend and bumped her up to 40th place among the 60 competitors. She finished at +13.
The Sooners finished in 11th place at last year's Big 12 Championship. Their fifth-place finish this year marks only the third time in Big 12 history that a team that finished outside of the top ten placed in the top five of the next season's tournament.
OU's postseason fate will be determined Monday night when the NCAA announces the 72 teams qualifying for NCAA regionals competition.
