COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Oklahoma women's golf team shot a second-round 293 (+5) at the Big 12 Championship Saturday at the Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo. The Sooners ended the day in sixth place, eight strokes behind first-place Texas.
The round marked Oklahoma's lowest 18-hole Big 12 Championship score in program history.
"We got off to a tough start again," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. "We kept on fighting and played really strong at the end. We have one round left and a good chance to catch up. We had a good practice session and hope that our putting is on tomorrow and we can bring the title back to Norman."
Freshman Emily Collins paced the Sooners with a team-best 70 (-2). In Friday's round, Collins shot a 79 to finish the day in a tie 49th place. Her two-day total of 149 (+5) now puts her in a tie for 24th.
Collins began her second round at three over par after seven holes before getting hot on the back nine. Starting with the ninth hole, Collins registered five birdies over a six-hole stretch. Her five birdies were the second most of any golfer in Saturday's round.
"My irons were solid all day, but especially during that stretch," said Collins. "I was leaving myself with easy birdie opportunities. The highlight of my round was a 75-foot drop that landed a few inches from the cup on hole No. 13 which was really exciting."
OU senior Ellen Mueller shot a 1-over 73 for the second consecutive round to finish the day in a tie for 10th place. Mueller leads the field of 60 competitors in number of pars through the first two rounds, collecting 28 in her 36 holes of play.
Freshman Chirapat “Ja” Jao-Javanil is tied with Mueller after firing a 75 (+3) Saturday. The freshman shot a 41 (+5) on the front nine before ending her round with seven straight pars and a pair of birdies.
Junior Brooke Collins shot a 75 (+3) to finish the round in a tie for 44th place and freshman Anne-Catherine Tanguay shot an 80 (+8) to stand in 48th place.
The team standings remain tight with 10 teams within 15 strokes of first place. Madison Pressel of Texas leads the individual standings by six strokes with a 137 (-7). Pressel has carded eight birdies and two eagles in her two rounds.
Due to predicted weather conditions, officials have decided that Sunday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT. The Sooners will be paired with golfers from third-place Texas Tech and fifth-place Missouri.
