NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma women's golf team carded a second-round 304 (+16) Saturday at the 54-hole Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. The Sooners are tied with No. 5 LSU for 15th place in the 23-team event with a two-day total of 599 (+23).
Oklahoma, No. 20 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, is in front of three top-40 opponents in its toughest tournament this season. The Liz Murphey boasts 14 top-25 teams, including five ranked in the top 10. All but four of the 23 competing schools are ranked in the top 40.
“It was a tough day,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “Conditions were tough and we were only able to sink one birdie.”
The Liz Murphey features a unique format in which all five competitors from each school play together on each hole (as opposed to seeded players from three or four teams playing together). A team's score for each hole is determined by the lowest four scores on that hole. Individuals' total scores are used in the player standings.
Freshman Chirapat “Ja” Jao-Javanil shot a 79 (+7) to finish the round in a tie for 39th place with a 36-hole total of 154 (+10). The freshman was the only Sooner to record a birdie in Saturday's round and is three strokes out of the top 20.
Senior Ellen Mueller and freshman Anne-Catherine Tanguay are tied for 52nd place with two-day totals of 155 (+11).
Junior Brooke Collins stands in a tie for 61st after shooting a second-round 77 (+5) to bring her total to 156 (+12).
Freshman Emily Collins, who began the round in a tie for 93rd, fired a team-best 76 in the second round to climb into a tie for 72nd.
The University of Georgia Golf Course is proving a challenge for the entire field, with all 23 teams sitting above par after two rounds. OU is just above the field's current average 36-hole total of 596 (+20).
No. 3 Alabama leads the event by four strokes over second-place and fourth-ranked Purdue. Purdue's Numa Gulyanamitta leads the 120-player field at 144 (E).
The Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic concludes Sunday morning with a shotgun start at 8:00 CT. Live stats will be available at Golfstat.com.
