NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma women's golf team shot a 301 (+13) in its final round of the regular season Tuesday to finish in fifth place at the 18-team Baylor Spring Invitational, held at Twin Rivers Golf Club in Waco, Texas.
It was the Sooners' seventh top-five finish in nine regular season tournaments.
“We didn't play as well as we were hoping, or what we're capable of,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “There are some aspects of our short game we'll be focusing on this week in preparation for competing for a Big 12 title next weekend.”
The Sooners finished 20 strokes behind champion Texas Tech but placed above the other four competing Big 12 squads: Kansas, Baylor, Nebraska and Missouri.
Oklahoma was led by freshman Chirapat “Ja” Jao-Javanil, who recorded her fifth top-eight finish of the season after claiming sixth place with a 54-hole score of 224 (+8). The Baylor Spring Invitational marked Jao-Javanil's third top-six finish in the past four tournaments.
Senior Ellen Mueller carder her seventh top-15 finish of the season, tying for 11th place with a 227 (+11). The senior boasts 26 career top-20 finishes at OU.
Freshmen Anne-Catherine Tanguay and Emily Collins tied for 35th place after each shot a 235 (+19).
Junior Brooke Collins shot a 237 (+21) to finish in a tie for 49th place and freshman Mariah Montoya, who competed unattached from team scoring, shot a 249 (+33) to tie for 81st out of 94 golfers.
The Sooners' post-season play begins April 22-24 at the Big 12 Championship, hosted by the University of Missouri. Oklahoma competed at the host course, the Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo., last fall in the Johnie Imes Invitational. The Sooners took second place in a 15-team field that featured eight Big 12 teams.
