Women's Golf in Second After Record-Breaking Round

NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma women's golf team shattered the school record for lowest round, firing a first-round score of 282 (-6) Monday at the 54-hole UNLV Spring Invitational at the par-72 Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev. The Sooners finished the day in second place in the 15-team field, trailing frontrunner BYU by two strokes.
Senior Ellen Mueller stands in second place individually at -5, one stroke behind BYU's Kelsey Vines. OU teammate Chirapat “Ja” Jao-Javanil finished the day in third place, one stroke behind Mueller.
“The girls played great today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “I'm really proud of the way they carried themselves and performed. We made quite a few birdies, which made the round very exciting.”
Oklahoma, ranked No. 21 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, saw three career-best performances in Monday's round. Jao-Javanil and Brooke Collins each set career lows while Mueller tied her career-best round.
Mueller's 5-under 67 matched her third-round performance at the Dale McNamara Invitational this past fall and came one stroke shy of tying the program record for lowest individual single-round score. Mueller recorded five birdies, all on par 4's, and no bogeys.

“My short game felt effortless today, which really helped me relax in all aspects of my game,” said Mueller. “I've been working a lot these past few weeks on my cleaning up different aspects and not giving strokes away. I stuck to my game plan and was able to take advantage of a lot of birdie opportunities throughout the round.”
Third-place Jao-Javanil also collected five birdies as she shot a 68 (-4).
Brooke Collins recorded four birdies en route to a career-best 71 (-1). The junior sits in a tie for seventh place.
Freshman Anne-Catherine Tanguay shot a 4-over 76 to finish the round in a tie for 39th place, while fellow freshman Emily Collins sits in a tie for 43rd place after shooting a 77 (+5). Collins recorded four birdies on the day but suffered from a triple bogey on the 18th hole.
Collins' 7 on the par-4 18th was one of just two big numbers the Sooners recorded all day, an area Drouin has been focusing on since the spring-opening Lady Puerto Rico Classic.
“We had a lot of big numbers in Puerto Rico and we've been working a lot since then on adjusting our shots to avoid them,” said Drouin. “We've been focusing on our short game the last few weeks and, as you can see, it really paid off. We put a lot of emphasis on avoiding big numbers and the girls did a great job following our game plan to achieve that.”
The Sooners lead third-place Pepperdine (ranked No. 18) by three strokes. Oklahoma will tee off in the tournament's second round Tuesday morning at 10:50 CT and will be grouped with golfers from BYU and Pepperdine. Live stats are available at Golfstat.com
