NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma women's golf team tees off in its second spring tournament March 7-9 (Monday-Wednesday) at the UNLV Spring Invitational at the 6,246-yard, par-72 Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.
The Sooners, ranked No. 20 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, are coming off of a ninth-place finish at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. OU had finished in the top three in all four of its fall tournaments.
“This is a big tournament for us,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “We're playing at a great golf course with a lot of opportunities to make some birdies. The course is very scorable, depending on the conditions. If the wind does pick up, it'll become a lot more of a challenge. We're excited to go out there and hopefully make some birdies.”
The 15-team field features three other teams in Golfweek's top 50: No. 47 Tulsa, No. 42 UNLV and No. 24 Pepperdine. Big 12 foes Baylor and Nebraska are also competing in the event.
The Sooners will be led by freshman Chirapat “Ja” Jao-Javanil, who is starting at the No. 1 position for her second straight tournament. The Thailand native tied for 13th place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, her fourth top-13 finish of the season. Jao-Javanil has yet to finish outside of the top 15 in her collegiate career (five tournaments).
Senior Ellen Mueller will start at the No. 2 position. The Evansville, Ind., product is No. 48 in the Golfweek/Sagarin individual rankings, the highest of any Sooner. She has finished in the top 11 in four of her five tournaments this season, including back-to-back top-three performances. Her 72.80 season stroke average is the lowest of the Oklahoma squad.
Starting at the No. 3 position will be Emily Collins. The freshman boasts a pair of top-eight finishes this season and is averaging 75.93 strokes per round.
Junior Brooke Collins will start for the second time this season, representing the Sooners at the No. 4 spot. The Louisville, Colo., native tied for 56th place out of 98 individuals at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.
Anne-Catherine Tanguay will complete the Sooner lineup at the No. 5 position. The freshman has finished in the top 15 twice this season and holds a stroke average of 75.13.
Drouin believes the team is well prepared for the event and will continue to adjust leading up to Monday.
“Since Puerto Rico, we've been practicing quite a bit,” said Drouin. “As a team, we've been working on our short game -- mainly our putting -- trying to make putts and a lot of 2-putts. Everything inside 100 yards we've been practicing quite a bit.”
“When we arrive on Saturday we're going to hit some balls to see how the air and altitude affect our shots. Then we'll have a full practice round on Sunday.”
The Sooners will tee off Monday morning beginning at 9:10 CT and will be paired with golfers from Tulsa and Idaho. Live stats will be available at Golfstat.com.
