NORMAN, Okla. - Ali Vandever hit her first career home run and Katie Norris added her second of the year as the 15th-ranked Oklahoma softball team downed Central Arkansas 8-3 Tuesday afternoon at the OU Softball Complex. The Sooners (28-9) recorded 10 hits for the first time since March 18 to defeat the visiting Bears (12-20).
Keilani Ricketts moved to 16-5 on the year, picking up the win in relief. Ricketts pitched the final 3.1 innings, giving up just one walk while striking out five. Starter Michelle Gascoigne was responsible for all three of UCA's runs. Gascoigne pitched 3.2 innings, allowing the runs on five hits and two walks. She struck out six.
Norris and Brianna Turang each had 2-for-3 days at the plate. Norris' two-run home run was her second of the year and second in the last three games. Turang scored one run in the third and drove in a run, as well. Vandever's three-run home run came in the sixth. Haley Nix, Brittany Williams, Dani Dobbs, Haley McGregor and Chana'e Jones all added OU's other hits.
UCA scored two runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. Kasey Britt reached on a two-out single and scored on Melanie Bryant's double down the left field line. Bryant then scored on a throwing error to put the Bears up 2-0.
OU took the lead in the bottom of the third. Jones reached on a two-out single and Martinez followed by reaching on an error. Turang then singled to score Jones and Nix's double cleared the bases for the Sooners.
Central Arkansas tied the game in the top of the fourth as Tarra Underhill reached on a single and pinch runner Ashlynn Tovar stole second before coming around to even the score at 3-3 through four.
Oklahoma responded in the bottom half as Williams reached on a double and came around to score on Norris' home run. The Sooners added the final three runs in the sixth as Williams walked and Norris singled. Williams and pinch runner Kaci Quintero then scored on Vandever's long ball to push the score to its final tally, 8-3.
Kelsie Armstrong (8-13) picked up the loss for UCA. Armstrong allowed eight runs, five of them earned, on 10 hits and one walk. Britt was the only Bear with multiple hits, ending the day 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Sooners return to conference action this weekend at No. 23 Texas Tech. The first game in Lubbock is Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. CT. The two teams close out the series Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Friday's game airs on SoonerSports.com and Saturday's contest can be heard locally on KREF 1400 AM.
