LUBBOCK, Texas – The 15th-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team managed just two hits against Texas Tech starter Kelsey Dennis as the Sooners (28-10, 1-2 Big 12) were shut out 5-0 by 23rd-ranked Red Raiders (36-3, 1-2 Big 12) Friday night. Destinee Martinez recorded both hits for OU.
Martinez led off the game with a bloop single down the right field line but was stranded to end the inning.
The Red Raiders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Mikey Kenney and Cydney Allen reached after back-to-back hit by pitches. The pair then scored on a double by Emily Bledsoe. Bledsoe then scored on a single by Sandy James to put the home team in front.
Brittany Williams walked to start the second but was also left on base at the end of the inning. After retiring the Red Raiders in order in the second, OU got a base runner on with two outs in the third when Brianna Turang was hit by a pitch. Turang was the third Sooner left on base in the game.
Dennis retired seven straight after hitting Turang as the Red Raiders continued to lead 3-0 through five and a half. In the bottom of the fifth, Logan Hall got a leadoff single, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt but was stranded to end the inning.
Martinez led off the sixth with her second base hit of the game but was again left on base to end the frame.
OU starter Keilani Ricketts walked James to start the sixth and Raven Richardson doubled down the left field line. Richardson moved to third and James scored on a fielding error to push the Tech lead to 4-0. Ricketts then gave way to Michelle Gascoigne who gave up a single to Gentsch to increase the Red Raiders lead to 5-0.
With the bases loaded with one out in the sixth, Gascoigne struck out Kenney and Allen to end the inning. Down to their final three outs in the top of the seventh, the Sooners went down in order to end the game.
Ricketts (16-6) threw 5.0 innings, allowed the five earned runs. Ricketts walked two and struck out eight.
Dennis allowed just the two hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Gentsch ended the game 2-for-3 and four other Red Raiders added the other hits.
