NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma women's golf team claimed its sixth top-three finish of the season Saturday after carding a program-record-tying 54-hole score of 863 (-1) to finish in second place at the 18-team MountainView Collegiate at the par-72 MountainView Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz.
Ranked No. 20 in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, the Sooners fired a 285 (-3) in Saturday's final round to finish six strokes behind 16th-ranked Iowa State. Oklahoma finished ahead of 13th-ranked Arkansas by one stroke.
“We played really well again today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “We put forth a great effort and were able to make a run at it. We made a lot of putts and made more smart shots. I'm really proud of our performance.”
Oklahoma's 54-hole score of 863 tied the program best set two weeks ago at the UNLV Spring Invitational. The Sooners' back-to-back below-par efforts are the only two times in school history they have finished under par in a three-round tournament.
OU received strong performances throughout its entire lineup, with all five team members finishing in the 98-player field's top 12, including three in the top eight. The Sooners finished ahead of seven Big 12 teams.
Leading Oklahoma for the third tournament in a row was freshman Chirapat “Ja” Jao-Javanil. The Thailand native shot an even-par 216 to tie for sixth place, finishing nine strokes behind individual champion Emily Tubert of Arkansas.
Jao-Javanil has recorded four top-10 finishes this season and has yet to finish outside of the top 15 in her collegiate career (seven tournaments).
Finishing one stroke behind Jao-Javanil in a tie for eighth place were Brooke Collins and Ellen Mueller. Collins posted her second straight top-eight finish while Mueller recorded her fifth top-10 finish of the season.
Freshmen Anne-Catherine Tanguay and Emily Collins tied for 12th place as each posted three-round totals of 218 (+2).
The Sooners' strong performance at the MountainView Collegiate added to their remarkable list of accomplishments this season. Oklahoma has placed in the top three in six of its seven tournaments and has finished in the top two four times.
Drouin's squad has a quick turnaround as it heads to Athens, Ga., April 1-3 to compete at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic.
