NORMAN, Okla. -- The 20th-ranked Oklahoma women's golf team fired a 36-hole total of 578 (+2) Friday at the 18-team MountainView Collegiate and is in second place at the par-72 MountainView Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz., with one round remaining.
After shooting a first-round score of 294 (+6) to end the morning in a tie for seventh place, the Sooners fought back with a 284 (-4) in the afternoon round to finish the day nine strokes behind leader Iowa State.
“We got off to a slow start this morning,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “We didn't make many of our birdie opportunities. We bounced back in the second round and played really solid. We were making a lot more putts and a lot more birdies down the stretch.”
Oklahoma was led by Ellen Mueller. The senior shot a first-round 73 (+1) before improving by four strokes in the afternoon round to finish the day in third place. Mueller trails frontrunners Prima Thammaraks of Iowa State and Emily Tubert of Arkansas by two strokes.
Standing one shot behind Mueller is teammate Chirapat “Ja” Jao-Javanil. The sophomore is tied for fourth place after shooting an even-par 72 and a 1-under 71.
Junior Brooke Collins, who was tied for 40th place after her first-round 75 (+3), climbed into a tie for 16th place with an afternoon round of 71 (-1).
Freshman Anne-Catherine Tanguay shot a 75 (+3) and an even-par 72 and stands in a tie for 25th place with a 147 total. Finishing the day one stroke behind Tanguay was freshman Emily Collins, who is tied for 31st place out of 93 competitors.
With 18 holes remaining in the 54-hole event, Drouin hopes her team keeps up the momentum from its second-round performance and pushes Iowa State for the title.
“We improved a lot in today's second round,” said Drouin. “We have 18 holes left and I'm confident we can continue to play solid golf and finish strong.”
