PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Oklahoma advanced four wrestlers to the round of 16 at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Philadelphia, Pa., Thursday morning. Jarrod Patterson, Zack Bailey, Tyler Caldwell and Nathan Fernandez advanced to the second round of the championship bracket, while four other Sooners are still alive in the consolation bracket.
"We've taken a couple tough losses, but this is a national tournament," Jack Spates said. "Certainly we are on par with where we were last year. We had some good wins this morning."
Oklahoma is currently 19th along with four other schools entering session two, which commences at 5:30 p.m. CT Thursday evening. Penn State stands first with 20 points. OU has eight points heading into the evening session.
Two Sooners, Bailey and Fernandez, went to sudden victory overtime to earn their wins over Chattanooga's Cody Cleveland and Peter Sturgeon of UNCG, respectively.

Bailey, the No. 8 seed at 141 pounds, recovered from a 0-2 deficit in the first period to even the score at 3 going into the second. Bailey earned an escape and takedown to take a 6-4 lead. Cleveland returned with two escapes and a takedown to lead 7-6, but Bailey earned an escape with 0:54 to send the bout to overtime. It did not take Bailey long in overtime to take the bout as he took down Cleveland 0:27 to win 9-7.
Fernandez also fell behind 0-2 in the first but earned two escapes to even the score at 2-2. Sturgeon took the lead back, 3-2, on an escape to start the third. Sturgeon was then penalized for stalling, which sent the match to overtime. In overtime, Fernandez earned the 5-3 victory with a takedown.
"Nathan had a character win as he kept pushing and pushing. Zack Bailey dug deep against a tough first-round draw that had beaten him twice before."
Sophomores Patterson and Caldwell each held their opponent to an escape. Patterson, the No. 8 seed at 125 pounds, defeated Boise State's Allen Bartelli, 2-1, with the help of an escape and riding time. Caldwell defeated American's Patrick Graham for the third time on the year. The No. 3 seed at 165 pounds, OU's highest seed in the tournament, had a takedown, escape and added over a minute of riding time to move on to the second round.
