Buechele, John Collect Big 12 Weekly Honors

NORMAN, Okla. -- For the second straight week, junior third baseman Garrett Buechele was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference's Player of the Week on Feb. 28. In addition, OU redshirt freshman Jordan John was named the conference's newcomer of the week. Texas A&M's John Stilson was named the league's pitcher of the week.
It marks the third career honor for Buechele and second of 2011. It is the first weekly honor in John's career. Buechele is also the first Sooner since Mark Redman to collect weekly conference honors in consecutive weeks. Redman accomplished that feat twice during the 1995 season.
Buechele followed up last week's impressive performance with 11 more hits, including two home runs and 12 RBIs. The preseason All-American hit .500 last week (11-for-22) and turned in three multi-hit performances and four multi-RBI games in five games. On Wednesday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, he tied a career-high with five RBIs and on Sunday against Oakland, he tied a career high with five hits. In five games last week, Buechele also scored seven runs, slugged at a .773 clip and had one walk and was hit by two pitches to post a .560 on-base percentage.
Buechele leads OU and the Big 12 with a .553 batting average, 21 hits, five homers, 17 RBIs, 36 total bases, a .947 slugging percentage and ranks second behind teammate Tyler Ogle with a .622 on-base percentage.
John, a redshirt freshman that missed 2010 with Tommy John surgery, struck out nine batters in a complete-game victory (seven innings) against Arkansas Pine Bluff on Feb. 23. John did not allow an earned run and gave up six hits and two walks across seven innings. It was the left-hander's first career start after tossing three innings of relief in his first appearance against William and Mary.
In 2011, John has a 0.00 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 10 innings pitched.
The No. 2 Sooners (9-0) are back in action this Tuesday at UT-Arlington and John will make his second start of the season. First pitch at Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington is set for 3 p.m. and the game can be heard live on the Sooners' Flagship station, KREF 1400 AM.
